Building the Rebel Freestlyer
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:46 AM »
With the acquisition of a NOS set of white Rebel Freestyle pads (cheers Eamonn), its given me the kick up the arse to build my Rebel Freestyler.  Only problem is, I have to do it justice and have tried and failed once before.  Because its my favourite ever frame I have to get it right and as you can see below, my first attempt was horrible, just too much going on.

Here is where I am now (minus the crank and the seatpost - they are gone).  I also have NOS Rebel CW Xpert bars, and that padset in white.   Basically its a bare f/f with a nice Hatta headset.

Heres the last attempt... as I said its awful.  However, I feel I have more knowledge from building the Quad and the TA to make a much better job of it this time.

So what do I do?  I want it to look propa 80's freestyle (think white walls, tuffs, pegs etc).  I also have a pair of NOS 901's in red that might be used (front and rear, or just rear?), so red may be the colour scheme of choice.

Ditch the blue, use all red, white  or alloy parts... White or red skyways/zeds...

Way too much going on in attempt 1, I agree.

The Rebel's stickers are very busy on their own and it is way too easy to think white, blue, red and lots of it.  Personally I would focus more on the white and leave the stickers to the out and out colour.

What I mean is, white Skyways or wheels, white bars, and anything that can be left chrome should be as this will tone down the colours and compliment the white.

Yeah, the old build was horrible, particularly the seat and crank.

Gonna go with lots of white and chrome, white Tuffs and white wall tyres.

Let the decals do the talking... :)

What suits a freestyle build, 1 or 3 piece cranks?

daz bmx it!

Daz is right, I would go 1pc all the way unless you have a set of flites hanging about.

Personally, instead of whitewall tyres I would go for a white tread with a gumwall, do not get all white tyres as this will be overkill.

Yeah, with the frame decals and the white padset with more logos on its really gonna kill it to have too much colour on it.

Already got really nice chrome bars, and other than that thinking:

White 901's
Chrome seatpost and white clamp
White stem
White tuffs
chrome 1pc and chainwheel
White handler style seat
White tyres with gum wall (GT or something)
Chrome or white skyway pegs
white A'mes or something similar
White or alloy pedals

Less is definitely more...
