does anyone know if it is possible to change the axle in a coaster tuff without messing with the coaster itself?

it would sort out the odd thread problem I have as well as making them a bit longer for modern peg fitting.

You could swap out the axle however as the coaster brake internals are threaded onto the axle you could only swap with one that has the same TPI as the one you already have.  This link shows an exploded view of a Suntour Coaster hub but you'll get the idea.

You could swap it out for a longer axle though....
