Removable Brake tabs, thoughts?
« on: March 04, 2009, 05:19 PM »
Just went to put my brakes on my frame and these tabs are fekkin useless! When you try and slacken
brake screw the tab comes out with it!
I now have a tab stuck fast in my brake and will have to put it in vice to get it out rendering it useless.
Completely p'd off as the bike would have been complete.

Are these tabs universal?

Use a spanner to hold the brake lug tight and then slacken off the allen bolt for the brake. Sorted.

spanner? there's no where to put a spanner on them.

Screw is tightened hard up to brass bush and lug is right into back of brake. Cant get hold of the lug, there is a tiny lip but not enough to grasp.

There should be two flat sides to get a spanner on (you would have used it to tighten the lugs in the frame.

Ah, you're fooked then. Most I've seen have flat edges for spanners

you wanna try and get a couple of nuts to thread onto the end of the lug which screws into the frame.
I'm guessing they'll be standard M6 or M8's or something, although to be honest, I ain't seen any of these in person yet...  :-[

tighten the two nuts against each other, then put your spanner on the inner one (nearest the brake) and stick an allen key in your brake bolt and try and loosen it all now.

hopefully that'll work. I use a similar method when trying to get cones loosened on an axle which has been removed from a hub (i don't have access to a vice :( )

any chance you have any washers about dave?
put one between the nuts, this might help tighten them against one another better.
whack a wee drop of grease on the threads too.

There's not enough room for washer. With the lack of room the outer nut has just stripped it's own threads. Looks like new tab and new brakes, not happy. Terrible design for brake tabs! Wont be buying a frame with removable ones again.

 :( that's not good matey,

I agree with you though, I think they're a kinda stoopid idea.

(Is there even a left hand thread on one of them to stop it trying to loosen itself against the spring tension every time the brake pivoted on the tab?)

Anyway, hope you get sorted Bud,

Get some lugs with the spanner flats on them - I presume they would be the same size thread and dia? Perhaps Grant would be able to tell us?

I got some new lugs for you today Dave

the ones with the spanner flat would fit fine as well however they are really designed for a frame with the flat topped brake boss
