need some help about my headset
« on: February 18, 2009, 06:54 PM »
As i am building my first new school bike i have to say i am pretty clueless. I have this kink bike co intergrated headset and with talk from stodgy how to put it on my macneil id fork it has been a success but there is a slight problem it has a slight movement like you can shake the fork back and forward it is so slight but i dont want that to happen. What is wrong here?

Also when installing a stem to i need a spacer of some sort to fit between the headset and stem?

Sorry i didnt know where to post this thread so thought here would be safe to discuss from the old school hardcores standing outside the thread  :D

There should be a cap and bolt/screw that sits on the top of the forks.
Slacken the stem clamp bolts, and the tighten the top cap screw till there is no movement (play) in the fork bearings.
Then re-tighten the stem clamp bolts, jobs a goodun  ;)

sounds like it just needs adjusting ,

loosen both the bolts at the rear of the stem(the ones that clamp the stem to the steerer)

now tighten the forks topcap to remove the play from the headset,

now align the bar/stem straight with the front wheel,

re-tighten the two rear stem bolts,

should sort it,

if it doesnt there may be a problem with the bearings,

also,

did you install the bottom race on the forks?
sometimes it takes a few rides to seat properly and when it does it leaves a slight gap which causes the headset wobble,

you can use a spacer on top of the stem or below, just make sure its big enough to allow the headsets pre tension to work,

Thats really clear there cheers will try it out step by step tomorrow lol Well with my kink headset there was a bottom race ring that came with it but after talking to dave, stodgy he said that the macneil fork already had a bottom thingy on the fork so i just put on the bottom bearing onto the fork which fitted nice and put everything together from there, really i need someone who would know how to fricking do it for me lol so i can sit, watch n learn

you need to make sure the top of the stem is sitting above the top of the steerer tube by about 5mm(i think) so the stem cap and bolt pulls it down properly

you can get spacers to space your stem so the top cap sits away from the steerer tube from bike shops, like Halfords.

Halfords dot hese nice carbon fibre ones and they only cost a couple of quid.

Moddy if you need some I'll get em and send em cos I don't think you get Halfords stores over the water do you?
