Schwinn Thrasher '83-4 + Aero Zytecs - advice?
« on: February 02, 2009, 11:05 AM »
Hello old school types! :)

I must admit I'm more of a Mountainbiker (sponsored XC racer when I was younger) but have owned a good few BMXes in my time including a custom built (by yours truly) Hoffman Dirty130 - lovely bike!  But!! enough about me - I have been clearing out the shed (trying to drum up a little extra cash) when I found a retro BMX that turns out to be a Schwinn Thrasher from 1983-4 (it's confused as has the number stamped on it of an 83 but the looks of an 84 :idiot2:)  Can you advise on the value of this frame/fork/bar combo if any?

Unfortunately I noticed some cracks in the small gusset behind the headtube  :( - can you tell me if it's unsafe to ride/can be fixed/pointless to fix as it's safe?  I can't see any other damage to the frame or welds around the headtube or signs of stress although it must have taken some force to crack the gusset

Also I have discovered that the pair of Aero Zytec mags are possibly worth something - the front one is really quite good condition apart from axle etc being rusty but smooth - the rear is however damaged so could people advise if it has any use/value any more as even the bearings feel a bit dodgy  :-\

Any advice asap much appreciated! :)

Cheers

I'd say £30 tops for the frame and fork bars and stem set and £20 for the wheels  :daumenhoch:

Hey Thanks, :daumenhoch:

I have someone willing to pay £20 for the frame etc so I guess that's cool :D

Was that £20 for both wheels as the rear is ..um knackered ... or £20 for just the front?  On that note - if I were to clean up the front how much do you think I could get for it as it's pretty good cond?

 :)

For only one wheel!  I'd be stoked to get something like that much! - so glad I didn't throw them away! :D :daumenhoch:

Do you think asking £35 is fair for a cleaned (but not bleached) single front wheel with slightly rusty axle and wheelnuts but good running?  If not what price would you recommend?

Also shall I bin the rear wheel or is it worth something to someone do you think?

Cheers :)

P.S. sorry to sound dull but what does 'NOS' stand for (I've not much experience of old school restoration speak ???)

:) cool - but it is a rather rumbly in the bearings department and missing 2 of the bolts  :(

If you're still interested then I'll check it out for you and take a few pics and we can see if it's salvagable (the freewheel runs well and clicks nicely :D so maybe that at least) - I'm assuming the main wheel is completely useless due to the cracked rim.

Ok cool - I was thinking it was quite surprising! lol - so if I were to clean up the front only to almost NOS (finally found out what that means after some searching! ;) ) it would be about £25 as a good price?
