I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)

if caustic did't touch it, either you didn't make it strong enough or it's not anno.

I think you may need to try kryptonite because it sounds like these feckers use to belong to superman.  :P :)

The problem i can see with caustic soda now is that you have already started removing the anno in places so when you immerse it in the caustic soda solution it'll start eating away at the alloy where the anno isn't present i think  :-\
I would be very cautious and keep checking it all the time or they will have more holes in them than they do now

I have never used caustic soda before but have seen what it did to fishface's 7C's

If i'm talking b*ll*x i'm sure someone will correct me  :daumenhoch:

Caustic soda will eat away the bare aluminium, leaving pits.
There's nothing that will eat the anodising and not the ally - anodising is a surface protection put on because it's more haard wearing than the bare metal.
Chromic acid should do it without removing the base metal but it is a very nasty substance and not so easy to get.

Anything abrasive will remove the bare metal quicker than the anodised metal, so again you'll see pitting.

tough job with no easy path. I'd suggest speaking to restoration specialists - classic car places, etc. Or maybe find an anodiser locally that might be able to help out?
