Era correct survivor part or NOS newer part ?
« on: January 13, 2009, 09:10 AM »
Right then - i've started getting pretty finicky lately about getting things as era correct as i can find (or afford !) for my builds..... but sometimes it's hard to go with the era correct part if you have a later NOS part that can take it's place and look all shiney and new. So I was wondering what the general consesus among rad members was......... ???

I tend to go with a total NOS build or a total survivor build.

Im not a lover of mis and match.

Only my opinion.

Take your time and go era-correct wherever possible. It's a false economy going for parts that aren't quite correct if that is your goal.

But, it's your bike, so build what makes you happy and stuff what people think. It's all BMX and all good.

if you have to ask, there is only one answer. era correct. you know it's not right even when it looks nice. that is a feeling that sucks ass when you finish a build. everybody else loves it, but you just look at it rubbing your chin thinking about that wrong stem or wrong brakes. like having 901's or nippon's on your laserlite.

I must admit I am also starting to go down the same route.  I just cant face 901's on my new 83 quad.

However, either way which is worse, a newer (say late 80's with older parts) or an earlier frame with later parts?

Cos technically the older frames are more likely to have ended up with newer parts as bits were replaced / upgraded...

What about re-furbed used era correct parts, check out these Tuffs....

Now for what these cost me, I could have got some of those new plastic hub Tuffs  :-\

But I would rather spend a little time, effort & money to get the build just right with the correct parts  8)

Can't only agree with that Chris  :daumenhoch:
Used parts often means refurbished, on my bikes. From obvious little cleaning to major operation....

I tend to avoid the noss stuff now and go more for refurb, but at the end of the day go with what YOU want :)

half decent used parts give a build soul  :daumenhoch: too easy to throw money at a build and end up with something that evokes very little, used parts bring warmth to a build, IMO

Era correct , NOS or restored . Some of the best satisfaction I've had is restoring a part that looked dog rough when I got it , also factor in how the number of NOS parts has decreased in the last 4/5 or so years . Sometimes slightly later parts creep in , reason for this can be parts being updated as you go along like bitd .

"Make do" parts are ok on a rider , if you want to enter a S&S bike then details are key .
