If you had your time again??

I've spoken to loads of people about this in the past.

If we had our time again where would the sport have gone??

The facilities the guys have now are just unreal in comparison to what we had. The 50 pence peice 1/4 ruled in my early days but yet we still rode them. How much further could WE have taken things?? Or, would we have done a Back to the Future II thing were we went in a completely different direction to the way things have gone now.

If I could go back, I would have been more aggressive at comps. I always played it too safe.

I don't think so as it happens.

People change generation over generation. We're influenced by sociey, music, fashion, allsorts. I think Bob Osborne got it right in Joe Kid, he said something like 'kids these days are showing levels of bravery that their parents have never experienced'  or summat like that.

And I think he's right.  I did some stair gaps when I was riding in the early 80s for example, about 10 steps or so, but there's no way I would have launched myself down a 30 step double set. And I don't think anyone else would have either. Not in 82/83. But the generation of riders that followed me, and the one after that,  would just send it.

Everything evolves at a natural rate generally, and BMX is no different I reckon.

I would never have imagined I'd do a 540 air on vert when I was 17 years old.  Billstup will vouch for how well I used to air back then  (crap and not very often). It took the next generation of riders to show me it was possible, when I was at the ripe old age of 29.

Im at the ripe old age of 29 and yesterday shit out of a full speed launch of a speed bump for fear of broken face. Just because I havent ridden in anger for years i've turned pussy. Anyroad as the sport has evolved everything has been done until the tricks we used to do are considered easy. Watch a few early freestyle routines then watch some new flat and street stuff and if you anything like me youl watch the early stuff and think I used to do this stuff all day long then watch the new stuff and think they are all mad. The student allways surpasses the master and that is a good thing or we wouldn't be watching bmx at all just videos of guys on youtube doing framestands and kickturns. Big up the new school but dont forget your roots

I just wish I never met girls and stayed in love with my wheels haha
Been great getting back into oldskool again and I am trying to ride everyday now and having fun along the way.
It feels fresh now and a challenge so probably wouldn't change a thing..I live in the now and the past is dead...Long live the future :daumenhoch:

and if you did try a 30 double set back in 1982 then i don't think they would have survived due to the weakness of the old bikes.....

I agree w/ this.....yeah we has crap ramps and yeah we were at the beginning of the sport so we had no standard to look to, but todays kids are just plain nuts. Evolution of the bottle and I lost my bottle years ago.

I feel the need to let you know I'm not 29 anymore.....  I pulled my last 540 in Nov '07....... aged 41...... after about a 9 year gap or so.

And yeah, I was scared shitless!!!!

I hope so.  The plan is to arrange a vanfull so I don't have the burden of the fuel bill.  I'm going to have a word with the Charlton Massive tomorrow night.

I'd just like to point out that looking back - dosen't fair well for what is still very possible.

I prefer to think I'm still good for it (even if gravity & age tell me different).
