Wheel Building advice!
« on: December 19, 2008, 02:09 PM »
Mods im sorry that this is in this section, but I wasnt sureif it should be in the tech area as Id like info from some of the guys who ride new school wheels, and though bmxchat would be a good place to start. Thanks!
Im learning to build wheels, have had a look at Stidd's excellent how to in the Tech Resto area on Rad, but Id like some more advice. It seems Stidds wheel build how to is for 2 cross pattern lacing? Am I right?
Are most modern wheels nowadays built 3 cross mostly, or 4 cross in some cases? Or still 2 cross/ Im not sure many are two cross now , hence my post here rather than follwing Stidds guide to build a new schoo lwheel.  Id love to know about the spoke lengths that most modern wheels now use, and what pattern or lacing ... its long overdue that I learn to build my own! Any help appreciated!!! It woud mostly be modern casette rear hubs onto modern rims, with modern front hubs, all 36 hole and not 48 hole. Cheers!
steve

if you lace them like stidds build your spokes would end up about 10mm sticking out of the rim
when a wheel is laced properly the nipples should only be sticking out a few mm for tightening.
hard to explain
when you turn your hub backwards /left  on a 2 0r 3 spoke lace  you turn it back further for a 4 cross
it would take me 2 minuites to show you
i should do a you tube vid on building these things
