Seriously thinking of racing again - Advice needed
« on: January 31, 2006, 08:29 AM »
Ok,  If i want to go racing again,  can I use an old school bike ?  Would it pass the scrutineering,  whats the deal with clips ? are caliper brakes ok,   what do I need to know ????

Any advice needed.

+ How long does it take to get round a track thses days, need to check I can pedal flat out for long enough ?  LOL

Let me know,  I think i am ready to return.  I am even considering getting one of my JMCs out of the  show room, if its ok to ride an old school ride in a non old school race ?

I know full face helmets are advisable,  but if i want to go for a pracitice would i be alowed on with the dirt jumping helmet i own.  I dont want to buy a full face, do one lap and decide its not for me ?

I thopught I would do a practice lap on the day of the race, and if i felt up for it buy a full fac e on the day, if there are places at the meetings selling stuff like their used to be ????

Yay!  Go for it Jon0.  Have given this some serous thought myself over the last few months but again would be confused what to race.

As for how long round a track....get down to your nearest one and try it  ;D  I have only been round my old local track which is hardly new school, but also been to Coppull and legs are ready for giving up halfway round and by the end I need oxygen but...we all know it gets easier the more you do it!

As for helmets.....don't quote me but am sure you don't need a full face, although advisable.  Not sure if they still do scrutineering....I heard you can race on whatever.  ???

Jon ,

The bike is fine , tracks are more aggresive now with bigger jumps etc .

You might have a problem with practising on a Race day with a Pisspot , a normal practise day (dependant on the club) would probably be ok .

Don't use one of your valuable builds because the tracks are more aggressive therefore a greater chance of a broken bike .

A newschool bike need not cost a fortune , I've got a Staats Pro XXL frame you could have for £100 . Get stuff like GT Profiles etc .

Sam,  take the plunge, and have a go, I think i am going to, It all depends if the personi have been speaking with goes for it as he is going to drive,  That will be all the motivation i need !

Thanks Matt, I have a JMC Shadow that I would be happy to race on, It is probably my least valuable bike as the intergrated seatpost clamp must have broken at some point and it had the seatmast shortened to accomodate a normal seat clamp.

It has late 80;s GT profiles on already, Uni seat has now gone, it has a kashimax and a JMC post, and JMC bars, but I recon with the 1.5 araya's and sunshine sealed hubs, could be great for racing on?

Not to worried about the big jumps,  If I aint up to them, Ill ride them to start with, its been 20+ years after all !!

if i was you jon, i would get one of them plates with the u-brake mounts and use a u-brake. And put some 10 quid modern tioga comp tyres on it. Oh and a standard chain. remember it's going to get worn/recked like it or not! even if you don't go base over apex somebody usually falls off in your path. Well they always did BITD.

I have some old comp three copies I can put on,  what pedals do i need?   are there regulations about the pedal types or is it just advice based on not spoiling the os pedals ??

I am not bothered about the brakes  :LolLolLolLol:, I intend to be in the lead with no trouble infront of me, and no reaosn to slow down,  surely it will be just like this again on my first go - LOL    :LolLolLolLol:  :LolLolLolLol:  :LolLolLolLol:

Thanks guys -  Jon W

I did 30 seconds flat out on the exercise bike in the gym yesterday,  nearly had a heart attack.   (How long does a race last on average these days?)

I don't think I've ever got to the end so far. Sometimes it's easier to get off at berm 2 and get a coffee

Do it jon you wont regret it, i tried masters for a bit ( thats the 30+ 20" name) but felt
at my age the 24" was the way to go its also alot more competative, made some
great new mates as well, but remember when the gate drops the Bulls**t stops.

Best thing you could do Jon is get some of this :

You will fall off at some time, so its best to be prepared  :daumenhoch:
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

jono, you'll like mansfeild' the start hill's so steep you wont have to pedal the first bit  ;D ;D ;D. there should be a few rad boys there all being well. regards helmets, full face is now the norm, but helmet and chin strap as BITD are allowed. listen to bill about pads, it pays to protect. practise your speed jumps, cause these big jumps can put alot of stress on ya bike, unless ya super smooth. practise will start around 10 onwards, registration closes around twelve, so you'll have a couple of hours to practise. i'll try and remember to bring a full face helmet, for ya to borrow if you want. hope to see ya there, make sure to wear a red carnation so i know who you are.  ;D ;D
