Am I missing something?
« on: August 26, 2010, 07:15 AM »
Hi guys.

I got my Curtis frame back from chrome yesterday after a 10 week wait.
I spent last night building it and I'm very pleased so far.

Had a slight problem fitting the sugino 44 to my 400's. I've got nos sugino chainring bolts and they tighten and hold the ring only if I put it on the outside of the spider? If I put the ring frame side of the spider which is where I think it should go then the bolts are too long and when tight still allow the chain ring to wobble about!

Am I missing some washers or have I missed something????

Sounds to me like the bolts are to long.  You can file the down a few mm  :daumenhoch:

if you look at the back of the chainring you will find that there are recesses for the chainring bolts to sit in.
these will only be on the rear not the front, so if you put your chainring on the front of your spyder they don't get used where as if you put it frame side they do, thus reducing the overall thickness of the spyder/chainring.

so, either fit you chainwheel on the front or file down the female part of the bolt

hope this helps

Don't file anything !

As delray say's - you got it right the first time, inside of the spider!

If I am reading it right the bolts are too long when fitted like above picture as it should be

yeah that's correct! Can't fit like the pix as female part is too long so had to put the chainring on the outside of the spider!

File or not to file?
Will take some pics and post up later tonight.

the way the sugino spyder is made means that it can be fitted front (outside) or rear (frame side)
in the redline advert above ^^^^^ it is shown on the rear.
bitd we fitted them front or rear depending on two things,
A) chain alignment
B) the recesses for the bolts

if you want to fit it on the rear you can do one of three things,
A) get shorter bolts
B) reverse the chainwheel (spin it round)
C) file the female part of the bolt down
personaly iwould fit it on the outside as it looks better anyway (imo)

You can buy shorter bolts, no need to start filing them down  :daumenhoch:

Are the BB cups all the way in?   There looks to be a huge gap between the BB shell and the spider

Yeah done up tight!!! the cups were pressed in and the axle is tight with 0 play!!

If you buy bolts with shorter females you should still be able to use the Sugino males, normally cost about £5-6.
