what length cranks should i fit to a 18" bike . any idea s

165mm or 170mm at a guess. 155mm would strike me as too short but I don't really know so why I'm posting I don't know  ;D.

more depends on how old the rider, and how long their legs are, and if for an adult, how much ground clearance you want.

155 is good for a pit bike, or my lad is eight, and i've put 155's on his 20", so if 18" is for a youngster probs 155 or 160

have 140's on a 16 inch, have started looking at 18 inch bikes, some have 140's and some 150/155.
