Turning above the coping...??

Not sure that is the "technical" term for it...

Just wondering what the best way to learn to pop out over the coping and turn and land on quarters without injuring myself.

I can do it under the coping (although not consistently and I get freaked out when I get too close to the coping on a narrow ramp) but really keen to know the key pointers on getting them oover the coping sorted.  :-\

I did learn this, just, but haven't tried it again since.

Tony explained it as "carving but instead of turning in the ramp you go above the coping" rather than trying to rid eout and 180 round, just carve igher and let your natural line you were taking point you where you need to go.

i will give this a go again...one day.

Every time I go over the coping I land (well most times   :2funny: ) - how do you make sure you keep the bike from going over the coping onto the deck?

pump your heels through the bottom of the transisition

pull front wheel off the coping, keep watching the coping

tuck knees

land front wheel just below (quite key that) the coping

repeat


You can read about it all you want, do a 1000 and you'll probably get it

yep. not that ive managed it more than about 3 times.

a good roll in and pump on a decent mini should be enough to get a bit of air.

well, my problems have been:

chickening out at the last minute, thus losing speed and commitment.

hanging up on the coping

not being able to control the bike on re entry, resulting in the wobbly wheel to ground scenario.

good luck.

as above, do it a thousand time and you should be right.

thats my problem. not doing it a thousand times.

at least it doesnt hurt too much, falling off on a mini, its a nice gradual slope, and the ground is never as far away as you think, due to the nature of the ramp.

remember to launch your bike, if your getting into trouble, rather than getting caught up in it.

youll be lucky if you hang up on the front, youd be getting some serious air then!

I have caught my back wheel on the coping while turning back into the ramp, which can be ok, if its not too severe, but it slows you right down, and sends you off line, and shits you up.

by launching, i meant push your bike away from you if you feel that you are going to end up in a tangled heap at the bottom. falling in a mini is easy as pie, i doesnt hurt, until youve got your leg or god knows what trapped through the frame or whatever, that how ive seen people get hurt.

best to ditch it and run, and maybe look stupid, but living to fight another day.

his instructions are:

ride up the ramp,

turn around in the air

ride back down.

If's its just a case of riding up, turning around and riding back down I should be able to manage that....   ;)



I suppose the thing that is on my mind is when the front wheel goes above the coping will it just keep going up and I "hop" round or do I need to do something to keep it going up and then do something else to face back down the ramp?

Essentially is it the same movement as doing a turn under the coping just above it with more speed and no ramp under the wheels?

if your trying it at the works in the main hall they have a large 1/4 and a smaller one with the runway inbetween,if you practice on either of those and land on the runway you'll get the feeling  of been airbourne,then try  it out on the 1/4 at the other end.


or if you use the bowl,the transition is'nt as steep so it's ideal to practise on/in

im still learning.
i vary bewteen 1ft and 3 and a bit feet out but on 7ft ramps or higher#
i cant air little 5ft jobs

Just want to be more confident to turn near the coping - so that if I do go over  - I don't panic, spaz out and fook myself!!!

build up so u bump the coping with your front wheel and turn back then build up
