Why do people leave freewheels on hubs they've taken the rims and spkes from. You then end up breaking the hub to get the freewheel off.

Get yourself a dremmel and use little cutting discs to carefully cut the freewheel off.
Cut it into two piece in line with the axle.
If you are very careful you can do it well enough not to cut into the hub threads.

can you not push the spokes through the holes the right way on the freewheel side, before offering it up to the rim, you may have to flex the spokes a bit, worth a try!!! :daumenhoch:

Too late cos I had to bugger the hub to get the freewheel off.

You can't lace the wheel with the freewheel on because the spokes will only go in on the opposite flange.

If you have this problem again sent it to me....my brother owns and engineering company, I had the same problem took the hub down there put it in one of the lathe chucks (with soft jaws in) and hey presto  :coolsmiley:

ive used an air chisel to get one of one that came from america
no damage to the hub untill i left it in caustic soda lol

What about lacing one side (opposite freewheel). Will that provide enough torque to use the wheel as the lever in the vice?  ::)

I had that once with a set of Suntour hubs I bought - was a right bugger to get the freewheel off  :tickedoff:
Tried lacing one side but the spokes just kept flexing. Ended up putting the freewheel in a bench vice and crushing it till it seized then twisted the hub to free it off :daumenhoch:

There is another way if the spokes have been cut [but it is very time consuming]
1:you trim all the cut spokes so that they are all the same length[eg: 2"]
2:you rethread the short trimmed spokes
3:you get an equal amont of good spokes,and cut off the bent ends [hub end]
4:thread this end also[keep them as uniform as possible]you will have straight spokes threaded at both ends
5:get some long nipples[furnar furnar]and screw them down equally to the spokes on the hub
6:take the newly cut lengths and screw them into the other side of the nipples-
what you are doing in effect is, extending the trapped/cut spokes that are stuck in the hub,using a nipple as a join to an extention.
7:lace to any rim in any fashion,and remove freewheel in normal way.
I know this is long winded,but if the hub is super rare etc,it will be worth it!!!!

The hub came as just a hub with no spokes in so the freehweel must have been removed and then put on.  :idiot2:

Might not be on that tight then, try using a plumbers doobry to grip the hub with and remove the freewheel, just a thought  :-\.

I did it by accident a month or two back. It didn't even cross my mind to remove the Freewheel first before i removed all the spokes.
It was only when i finished when i thought bollox what have i done. :idiot2: :idiot2: I took the hubs over to Sawzell when visiting last week and showed him and they came off very very easily thankfully.

Still we all learn from our mistakes and i wont make it again. :LolLolLolLol:
One build a year, the only way to get it right. No rushing involved.

Im assuming its the hubs you got from me dude? I had them yonks and yonks, not sure where I got them from, they were in a huge old box of mostly crap - I guess that whoever once owned them put the freewheel on whilst fettling then left it there. Didnt realise it was on so tight, I never touched the bloody thing, just wanted shot, thought it could be unsone or even crushed off. Drop us a pm and I'll give you your money back if you like mate, I had no idea itd be a nightmare, just thought theyd be of use to someone!

benchvice with some wood in jaws, grip the hub tight as, remove freewheel as normal....hopefully
