Advice on restoring GT sealed hubs needed
« on: December 02, 2008, 10:31 PM »
So...

I've got some old GT race hubs.  The chrome ones, sealed bearings, with the GT sticker around the middle.

The rear is in decent fettle but the front is losing the chrome in flakes.

I'd quite like to tidy them up and wondered what advice people have.

Can they be re-chromed?
Should I spray paint them?
Can they be powder coated?

What if I need new bearings?  Where will I get them?

What prep would I need to do for any of the options?

I'm looking for show quality.  I want them on my old school racer.

All advice appreciated.

Dex

Strip them down , they can be re-chromed . Just point out to your chromer that he should'nt polish all the moulding lines etc smooth .

Bearings , yellow pages or similar . Take them along to the bearing supplier or give him all the info ( codes etc ) from them .

 ;)

Alistair,

I had these done. I did lose some of the definition in the lines/ridges on the hub though. The guy I used definately knows what he is doing with regard to polishing too much so I think it was just the fineness of them and the thickness of the chrome maybe   :-\

That is good to know, as I have a set of DK hubs where the plating is flaking off too.

LMK also the chromer you used and idea of the price if that is ok?

Cheers

Paul
