Bad news---my knee
« on: November 17, 2008, 11:05 AM »
Just got back from seeing specialist to discuss the results of my MRi scan

ive ligament damage at front of knee but absolutely gutted that i have torn the cruciate ligament.
This needs reconstructive surgery, where hamstrings from elsewhere on me need grafting to make it good again.

Waiting list is months and months, but marked as urgent, but not before 6 weeks worth of physio, as has to be in best shape poss prior to op.

To make matters worse just come home and looked up the op on the net....screws to graft???

then looked at the healing programme, constant physio for months and no excessive use or dodgy sports for at least 9 months after  :wtf:

lets hope thats not how it goes, or i'll be off my bike for over a year!!!!!

having just worked 12 night shifts 13 hours a night without a day off, i'd say a perfect end to my working week

Hows your knee now Dan ?
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,

There are some positives to draw from mate.

First one is that as this is such a common injury that have got the fixing it part sussed,

Secondly, the recovery time they quote is usually worst case scenario for the average non sporty guy on the street.

Bmx'ers are tough so you can beat that timetable by a mile!!  :2gunsfiring_v1:

Same here.

Get your legs in tippity-top shape (especially hams & quads) and follow the instructions from the medics.

Don't get stressed dude as it'll make healing harder.  Stay cool, post some rad stuff in the mean time! :Great_Britain:

i don't get the ups and downs,,,,,some days i think i don't care about racing, lived without it for 22 years, just wanna be able to walk, straighten and bend my leg normally etc etc.

other days i look at photos of racing, or go in the garage and see my bikes and just soo wanna get out on them....have tried a couple of times to ride, but just cant bend my knee far enough to turn the crank.

Hate to admit it, but if i hadn't brought my lad a Kuwi for xmas think i would have turned my back on BMX again by now.
Damn, and i just brought myself new Fly racing gear for my xmas present off the missus!!!!

Also question how much i will be prepared to push when i eventually get back on a track, gonna be some mental block in there somewhere.

Never mind, not good news today, but at least i'm now on a waiting list, closer than i was yesterday :daumenhoch:

Si - you can put the Old School through their paces for me till i return, on a bad note if it takes that long i'll be going into 40+ cruisers :'( wont get a chance to kick some young butt :2funny:

thanks for the comments guys

Bob, just been reading your thread, thankfully (hopefully) no where near as bad as yours.

In terms of keeping in shape, went back to work the day after the injury (probably not good, cos over the next two nights i popped the knee a further three times, guess the cracking sound must have been more ripping)

still unloading lorries and pulling 1 ton+ pallets just limited to having to walk on tip toes when load bearing or pulling heavy stuff.
Have tried to keep active and do everything i did before injury to make sure i don't suffer any muscle loss, but my thigh has shrunk to about half size, but the calf has compensated for it!

Gotta try to stay positive, Kdub your right, when i had two discs removed from my back the surgeon couldn't believe it when he saw me outside the hospital having a fag the next day!!! then i went back to work after a month, when i still should have been in complete bed rest period......

bring on the surgery....get me back on my bike!!!!

No use worrying about some thing you have no control over Neil, i.e the wait for the op, just make sure you follow there advice once it`s done  :daumenhoch:

Magoo - if it's  'only' an ACL reconstruction, then you've got nowt to worry about brother!

All keyhole sugery these days and very straightforward.  In the meantime, get on an excercise bike and start pedalling, nice and easy but for an hour at a time.  My surgeon likened it to wringing out a cloth. The exercise will help to disperse the fluid, as will raising your heart rate. This will take some of the discomfort away.

You must have good strong pins pre-op.  Which I didn't have, hence some of my problems.

You can get your knee drained  (aspirated)  if its massive and uncomfortable. Docs won't neccessarily suggest it becasue if the risk of infection, but you can ask.

A broken ACL in itself is not a painful thing. A lot of people live long and happy lives without them.  Hell, I did for 25 years!!!

You do need to stop injuring it though, it just compounds your probems - trust me on this!

Sorry to hear that buddy, it's not good having to lay off your bike for a while.

But keep the interest in and build yourself something nice to make all those ops and physio worthwhile!

Yes Rob, tbh i'm not worried about the procedure or the hard work on physio as i keep fairly fit through work, its the timescales that are doing my head in, but cant complain its only been two months since injury and i've heard of people going longer before they even get a scan. Hell i suffered with slipped discs and a trapped nerve for nearly five years.

as for exercise bike, same issue as actual riding, cant bend knee enough to turn a full revolution of the crank, but saw physio today and he showed me how to move the knee cap around and gave me some exercises, first proper session next monday.

think tiredness is just putting an edge on the negativity, but you guys and your support is making me feel alot more positive :daumenhoch:

good motivation, but think old school would be the goal, only done one club meeting on cruiser, and after seeing 30-39 at the Southern champs, hmmm, more chance of kicking butt in old school me thinks.

Bill:

I had my op 2 weeks ago, Looking at about 3 weeks or so before I can get back on my bike (I'm walking and driving fine) just need a bit more time now before I can put any real strain on it.

Should be ripping next Summer though - I've got a new lease of life now that I've been forced out of action...... Now I just want to go faster and bigger!

Opps - Don't want to get you too excited my total recovery period has been some time (since april ish), and my injury not as bad.

I torn muscle, only pull ligaments, and I torn some cartilage my opp was to repair the torn cartilage so your recovery will be much more intense then mine.

Hope that helps - possibly not

Either ways I feel much more positive about riding, du to the lay off I've had
