Is it a good thing that BMX companies are re-releaseing there famous products of years gone by?

Are they just jumping on the band wagon and cashing in?

Are they skimping on quality/rushing production or leaving it to Friday afternoon?

Are they de-valuing the old vintage gear in circulation?

1.   I would rather buy an old TA , plenty about .
2.   I would rather save a few more pennies & buy Gen2/3 OS Profile cranks .
3.   Don't know nowt about  the stems    ( but they do look nice  ) .

We had this conversation yesterday over a pint JJ, i cant remember what the conclusion was thou.

I will be sticking to the originals i think, Pure cash in.

How can a New Skyway T.A be better than an original one, the drop outs on the forks   just B.S. They look good cos they are new, 10 years time they are repop T.As half the price of the Originals.

Profiles 40th anno, they do shoddy repops of their own classic cranks, there we go Haro are at it to.

Big respect to SE who seem to have it spot on, Modern take on a classic icon.

I think it is all money motivated...and just passed off as an anniversary/celebration of osbmx.

The TA reissue welding is shocking on 3 I have seen so far and the kind of weld you would expect on a budget 80's bike...my TA was an 86 and every weld was like a work of art the frameset was perfect.

I was looking at the profiles and they too look weak on quality chrome and almost tarnished..great if you are selling them direct to punters online cos how many will be arsed to ship
them back to the states?
 
Same as the TA...I would be gutted if either product landed on my doorstep I would feel ripped off by two of the most legendry names in
BMX.

i personally think all this repop stuff is on the whole a good thing , twin pinch redlines are a nice cheap alternative and as for the repro se stuff  ( rippers and quads ) in my opinion are great. a big  from me .

i have not seen a new ta in the flesh but i thought it was the same guy who welded them up in the 80's      has his standard slipped ?

Agree REDLINE as a company rocks...kept its tradition and history and its modern stuff is  cool and well made.

I don't know anyone who has been unhappy with redline crank chrome new or old.

Glen and skyway_dude have posted pics on here..I aint seen one in the flesh either..if the pics are anything to go by they don't look great...slipped is an understatement crashed and burned more like

1. Rather buy a re-pop as i cant afford a 80's one and i would use it everday!
2. rather save alot of money and go with my favorite and trusty Sugino cr-mo 1 pc crank (175mm)
3. Not a Mid-schooler so i wouldnt have a need for one.

right, well i bought my box cranks on the assumption that profile were a good firm and would do a good job.

if they havent, i've got a dilemna.

send them back.

or rechrome the arms to how they should be ( like dingo's JC's)

for 20/30 quid..i think thats the option for me...

ta's as per mattdub...there are plenty about.

as for s&m..for grungers and emos....therefore not on my manor.

i have inspected the welds on my TA and as a coded welder i cant fault the welds, well not with out cutting it up and inspecting the penetration and the gas mix etc so imm chuffed to bits with mine

I think with technology today in mind if they are to make re-pops then:

A) they should be better, the chrome issue on the profiles is crazy (having to get them re-chromed so that they are worth having) well I know its the only viable solution but it should not have come to that.
B) they should be designed better (the TA should have been made with a 21" top tube.

Conclusion:

Yes - If your going to do it right and justice.

No - If you going to botch it.

I've just received my TA and the welding is spot on, on par with an original 85/86 Skyway.

The reason they haven't a longer top tube is that the tubes originally date from 1986 and were found in a container and they have just been welded up and the frames powdercoated.

Personally I think Ed from ColoredTuffs has done an excellent job as it seems he works by himself and he has personally organised and seen this job through from start to finish.  Just wish there were more people like him that are as passionate about bmx's as he is and actually created something so special.

imho its not right

if you want to ride them , fair enough but honestly its not going to be any stronger than an 80s one ,so why buy something thats old technology to use now ?
buy a new school ride

if your wanting them to add to a old build or use as an old build ,then use old ones ,theres enough of them about TAs that is

and in all honestly ,if i was collecting stuff i would never want a copy of something its kinda cheating really , surely the hobby is based on collecting 80s BMX not reproduced stuff ?

but i dont have a problem with it , just cant see the point in faithfully making a copy of an old part or frame when in reality if you put your mind too  it can aquire the real deal

seems a bit of a tough shit situation with the cranks then...

mine are cheap enough to be rechromed and still make sense at about 220 quid all in...

given its a complete package and should be perfect when finished it still stacks up ok...

i dont think profile will get away with it, so i hope they delay the second batch until the chome is right...

people will look elsewhere if they dont.

i hope that profile sort their fook up out to john, theyre a high 'profile' company, and shouldnt have released these if they wasnt right.

I don't have issue with old school companies re-issuing products as long as they're distinctive enough from the originals that people don't get conned/ripped-off by unscrupulous people trying to pass them off as originals.

I think the retro route is the best way for companies like Skyway to go.  They've should make T/As with new school geometry, strength and quality like Azusa did with the JMC DY retro/replicas.

The re-issue TAs are a bit of an odd proposition as they're old tubing and old geometry but welded up recently.  Are they old school or retro?

I assume the Profile box cranks are retro (i.e. designed to be used but to look old school).

They've had the tubing all along , it was'nt found .

so if a lump of nylon has been sitting in skyways factory since 82 and they moulded it into a set of wheels does that make them old school ?
