Think the sealed ones still sell...I had some and they are pretty good but don't look as cool as alloy hubbed..anyone know why they changed the hub design?

Speaking personally I would only buy the alloy hubbed ones now. Look so much nicer on an old school build (even though you still could get plastic hubs bitd). Just changed all my placcy ones to alloy recently

Yeah agree..think they look a bit too modern on an oldskool build..the alloy hub design is a classic but if someone is doing a build on a budget that's cool I aint knocking them...I had em on my TA a while back and they where fine and had no problems with them...prefer alloy though.

Plastic hubs came out in late 84, so they are good for most things, just not the sealed ones!

The only difference, apart from the sealed hub, between old school plastic hubs and new school plastic hubs is the position of the valve hole on the rear.

Yeah but they don't have that OSkool visual charm about them..there is something about alloy hubs that captutres that freestyle era.

My old white placca ones where great didn't need to tighten an axel or anything in 6 months...my blue alloy ones have been a bit temperamental on occasions but seem to have them sussed now.

Definately agree the metal hubbed are the ones to get for old school builds, I was just saying technically they could be used on older builds if necessary and if they are proper old school plastic hubs.

problem with tuffs is though they are probably (def?) the most iconic bmx wheel of all time they are actually sh1t. fact.

I have one, and it looks nice but a nice 48 is a much more practical wheel.

tuffs:

Flex
Crack
Buckle
Chip
Scrape
Scratch
and once they are buckled there's no "stick em in the freezer to fix em" clause (because that is a sad urban myth) they are buggered.

of course for almost all old school freestyle bikes you have to have tuffs if you want it to look the dogs bowlocks, which ;ets' face it, tuffs look great.

please be advised this is just my opinion, i AM right however, but don't take it as a personal attack aimed at you just because you have tuffs.

now, where's the tongue in cheek smiley.....

48 is a much more practical wheel. (Handles weight better)

tuffs:

But things don;t change for no reason, if tuffs had been good then we'd still see them on new bikes today.
(i mean new school bmxes designed to be used as bmxes not retro bikes)
yes we might experiment with new ideas, and sometimes the new idea is better and we stick with it, like say digital TV over analogue.
but sometimes the new thing isn't as good as the old thing, like Tuffs vs Spokes.

some time in the 80's someone tried plastic wheels, and by the mid 90s everyone had realised that, in fact, spokes had always been better.

it's evoloution, if the skoda Estelle had been good, rather than a skip on wheels they'd still make it and wouldn't have moved on to the reasonably decent cars they make today.

ps: Zippy's merchandise is of the highest quality, and my opinion on tuffs is not in anyway directed at his mountain of brand spanking new Tuff wheels.

On most freestyle bike they do, but some just look the bollocks on 48s, no tuffs could look better on this than these rims

agreed, however, I don't really rate 48's, honest, I don't, i rate them as 3 to 1 against tuffs.

Spokes look cool as well..loving that GT.

My next build will be proper spokes weather its a freestyler again or race...chrome arayas and blue bullseyes and chrome spokes

I had planned to do a torker sport with the above wheels but never managed to get one so went for tuffs....do love blue alloy hub tuffs and the rims stay

cleaner than white
