Straightening mags in the freezer - urban myth??

Does sticking slightly buckled mags in the freezer to straighten them really work, or is it an urban myth told to you by your mate's older brothers as a kid?

It's an urban myth. If you buckle your mags, you should go to you local bike shop, they'll have a special spoke key for mags for 'trueing' them again

Well I thought you had to put them in a bath of boiling water, hand mould them back into shape then put them in the freezer!

it is true if you divvy's know anything about materials, depends which mag it is as they are made out of different plastics so it doesnt work for all of them

They're Aero Zytecs, in royal blue - not sure if the pigment makes a difference.

it's only a slight wobble, I might give it a try, don't suppose it's going to harm them..

Just wanted to check before I did it, coz the missis already thinks I'm a nutter buying 'little bikes' let alone sticking the wheels in the freezer!!

For my own peace of mind, people have heard of this method/rumour before haven't they, just checking I didn't dream it!!

how do you know until you try.

i think if you have bent one, the plastic will be stretched
its the only way you can really bend one

if your going to try, heat them and over stretch in the opposite direction.

perhaps clamped to the dining table (to please her indoors) or a flat surface, with the wobbly bit overhanging and with a significant weight attached for a while.

OK,  I'll jump in.....  My opinion is this;

Freezer - bollocks. Urban myth. I think the wheels just contract a little with the temperature drop, i don't see how or why they would reshape....except;

I believe that all that can be done is to remove the tyre and tube and hang the wheel up somewhere by its axle.  If its going to do owt at all, it will now 'relax' and maybe, possibly relax back into shape....  So, it could be argued that the tyre and tube come off before it goes in the freezer, and then it relaxes and falls back into shape a little aided perhaps by a little contraction....

I have hung my tuffs up before and the following morning they have been true-er than the night before.   Or is that just my mind playing tricks on me......

Your Du Pont Zytel rims will straighten if you freeze them as the temp drop below ambient for a sustained time will return them to the original shape they were when they left the mould, its like the same as a hair drier on your plastic moulded bumbers of your motor , what you have is one end of the scale for each material.

I had a nos pr. of z rims that were warped....I tried the freezing with no success. I then boiled the rims and formed them back into their natural state. I also weighted them down for a couple of days. After assy. the spin nice and true. Good luck.
