Can anyone tell me what was the difference between the 280 and the 280X? ???

one was a frame set and one was a full bike x .They were called a 280 coz they cost $280 .....

Alan's sold them both as full bikes the 280X being slightly longer just before they brought the PRO x out, I think that was sold as a frameset only.

What Mark said, the 280 was an inch shorter than the X. The frame and forks only option was called the LP/X
