Biggest jumps back in the day
« on: October 24, 2008, 09:01 PM »
I was going through my photos and came across this, Me at Hounslow (85/86) fourth straight, we had this as a big set of doubles until Martin Kemp came up short and re-arranged his face. We was told to fill it in after that, but what a jump, look how long it is and it sent you upwards, great days!
So never mind about the Dolly's of Poole, or Kong of Wigan, I think this was the biggest jump back then.

super rad, only raced Hounslow a few times, and really can't remember it?

Jumps like that these days, land flat, just think of the shock-waves that'd send through the old bones, need the vertical downside to absorb the impact of landing :daumenhoch:

Thats fooking massive Martin, how did the bike hold up ?
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Ones that stick in my mind where Coffins at Brum wheels, more cos lack of speed on take off, Kong at three sisters, dolly at poole.
Don't know why i don't remember the big ones in the london suberbs, i raced there more often than nationals, the only one i really remember was the big one after the first berm at hayes, but thats cos i had a nasty accident that damaged my back for life when my rear skinny exploded upon landing :2gunsfiring_v1:

I've posted this before somewhere, but it will give you an idea as to how big the Poole dollies really were....

I really love that picture, and funny thing is, if thats from the 84? national, i would have been standing practically next to you with my arm in a sling, cos i broke my collar bone on the triples the day before

I'd love to still be able to jump like that. :'( (mind can't say i've tried yet, too many injuries from falling off in straight lines) :LolLolLolLol:

It was the Dr Pepper National Mr Magoo.  :daumenhoch:

Talking to Jon Moore a while back at B'mouth, he said this was in practice as someone else in the picture wasn't in the same age group racing wise.

Yes I seem to remember about three jumping them at the same time in Gary's race, Wayne only in my age group, and bad memory for Superclass Think Andy did, possible Pete Middleton, and not sure but kinda remember maybe Sid Salisbury?

I was in Waynes age group aswell. A real tough age group that one. A local B'mouth rider that always did well was Rob Marshall, do you remember him ?????

I've seen another picture of two at a time jumping the dollies with one of the riders getting well squirley over them. Sure one is Pete Middleton but i can't remember the other rider.

I didn't get down that way much, bit of a treck for the old mans Lada/allegro.

Did Wimbourne once, Poole once, bournemouth once and another track down that way can't remember the name.

Haven't seen the pic, but think from memory i was sitting on the first berm at Superclass final time, and sure it was Pete that got very very squirly over Dolly, but as always Charlie was the best to watch, different style to Gary, Gary like myself, ducks down, keeps it low, Charlie used his legs like suspension on an mtb hits the lip and launches his whole body weight upward...great to watch.

Any other names from down that way?

I don't think any Southerners in our age stood out but Anthony Howells ( age below) and Nigel Murphey (2 above) were awsome riders.

I raced with Ant at Solent Spitfires, Bournemouth and we rode a few times together at another track in Southampton called Lordshill.

Aint seen him for years but he posts on BMX Talk occasionally and apparently still has his bikes in the loft. MRD's aswell. :smitten:

Nige rode for Hot Wheels during the 85 Kelloggs Track wars at Birmingham, good results aswell.  Tried a comeback a couple of years back at Bournemouth and had a bad smash to one of his legs.
