Ok it sounds like your BB cartridge bearing collapsed and as a result of not catching it quickly the collapsed bearing has damaged the frames bb shell.
They will know that this wasn't the frames fault. See where i'm coming from, they will be used to seeing this sort of thing.

the bearings are still smooth.the bearing presses in on its own as does a new one

Sorry man think i picked it up wrong, when you said the bearing fell out i assumed you mean't the bearing was knackered.
So the fault is that the BB bearing is not a tight fit in the shell i.e. the interference fit is not tight enough. which is a frame manufacture fault obviously.

my friend just bought a lurch and the brake mounts are welded on in the totally wrong position. ie the tyre rubs the brake and the pads cant even touch the rim.

its like riding s+m's from the 90's all over again.
