Good weekend with some friends
« on: January 17, 2006, 07:59 PM »
I had the previlege of hanging out with a few BMX legends this weekend.  Johnny Johnson, Sidehackguy AND Mr. Rick Courteau:

Rick Courteau was factory Webco back in the day, worked at their facility and was teammates with the legendary Cash Matthews and Matt Raymer:

A few publicity pics were taken of the guys, including this one:

Rick was featured in the old Webco ads:

Back in the stone-age, the ads would say it was Archie Watson, but the visor said Rick and I always wondered about that.  I brought up the subject to Rick and he just smiled.

We talked about the old days, checked out a very cool photo album and we found out that Rick C. is quite the talented artist.  Life size wooden portraits of Pterodactyls, monkeys and other stuff dot his house.  I wish I had taken a picture of this, but take my word for it, they were VERY cool.

Rick Graciously passed for  on a few items to the Reilley1 Museum of Ancient BMX radness including one of the first "long" frames  ever made.  This frame was custom made for him in 74 and is about 2" longer than the standard frame of the period.

along with his cr-mo bike team issue model:

with cool Webco stem:

and Webco ROUND fork:

He also had this beauty.  Early non-drilled out mild steel "Team Repica":

He also passed on couple of other bikes including a very cool Cycle Pro Jammer and some other stuff including this killer tool box:

Which was set-up very moto ith the sprockets ready to go:

and had very cool set of Oakley grips, Preton Petty grips and a motofied ashtabula stem with the threaded hole on top for additional grip

Like I said before, the items are very cool and are highly appreciated but the memories that the items, pictures and recollections brought back is what made this an excellent weekend.

Thanks Rick!!

PS.  It was a bit cold so I couldn't wear  the RadBMX shirt...:)

The one in Joe Kid belonged to ER  (Erich Richter) Another old school cat and is currently in Rick Twomey's possesion (I'm going to visit him and will try to  take pics of it this weekend)  The one I have came a little later but was basically made by the same crew.

To set some people straight, I'm not showing off with the people I know,  I am a nobody who happened to be there at the begining and have been blessed with friends who just happened to be very good racers back in the day.
I am trying to share with the UK old school cats some of early history.  Plain and simple.

Thanks

Rick G

Thanks guys.  Somebody just threw a little hate at me in e-mail saying I was showing off...

But back to the subject.  Here's another pic of Courteau from a local paper 30 years ago.
Picture also includes Robby from the #50 from the pic above:

I cleaned up the tool box and found the remains of a painted "Rick" just like on the visor from the pics above...to me, it was sooo cool..

I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'
