How to do a Hang 5???
« on: September 26, 2008, 02:52 PM »
Trying to learn to do a Hang 5 but I can't get the back wheel of the ground. Anyone give me some tips or pointers on how to do this trick?

Thanks

Thanks guys, some great help there. I just can't to get the rear to lift up despite leaning forward a lot. I think I am applying the wrong technique. Looking at the videos, it looks like you need to sort of pop or spring the back wheel up. Oh well, more practise :)

dont be shy as to dab the front brake till you get the feel    its just timing.

You need to use your arms. Put your foot on the comfortable peg side, lean forward and push the bike up to your bum. Hang 5's have as much to do with flailing leg balance as they do forearm control.

Decided I want to learn these too as its a really nice trick especially when you see someone hang 5ing around the deck of a bowl.
I have found dabbing the front brake really helps to get the rear end up but it means you lose alot of the rolling momentum once up in position.
Are you running a front brake? i certainly wouldnt fancy learning them without one.

Yes, running a front brake but so far have tried to do them without using it. In theory you should be able to do them without a front brake as its all to do with finding the balance point. So far I have not had chance to try but I will this week.

Had a quick go tonight and still no luck. That video is really helpful so I will try and have another go tomorrow. I think this is going to be one of those tricks thats bloody hard to get to click but once you do, it will be fairly straight forward.

to help as it helped me
go to a large car park or flat area
learning the balance point at slow speed can be harder than at a faster pace.
try turning the bars around and standing on the pegs facing the seat  so your at the front of the bike
roll along grab the seat and at a medium pace   lift the rear end of the floor by the seat and with one leg hanging use it as your balance.
after a while it will be easy to feel more comfy rolling
you can later swing the frame around  and try it the other way  even bring the frame right round and your rolling proper.if you can understand all that   :daumenhoch:

This might sound like a piss take, but it really isnt

Rob Ridge made a hang 5 training rig. It clamps on your bars and its got a long arm that reaches infront of your bars with a skate (or scooter?) wheel at the front. You use it to gauge the right position of the bike, and the wheel stabalises you a little while you learn. Its not strong enough to take all your weight but it helps as a referance point for the bike position.
Good old Rob  :daumenhoch:

found the pics looks crap but it is just used then lobbed away
but it works and you can roll on it full weight ,the lean back to take the wheels of the deck
until you get the feel.

Just had a go at this. Sort of started to work but still need to work on my balance going backwards with two feet on pegs. When I did get it right, lifting the seat sort of kicked in ok.

dont do it to slow  get the bus rolling at medium speed   and dont put 2 feet on the pegs
one foot on the peg  the other is your moving balance so leave it to catch the balance.
