Herlingshaw indoor races
« on: September 24, 2008, 11:32 AM »
BITD when we had real winters with proper snow and ice, we used to go and race indoors at the Herlingshaw centre, Middlesbrough. The races where run by 'Big John' Tucker, my main memories are of the super slipper surface, pedaling while drifting sideways round the first corner, the bendy gate, lane eight being very close to the barrier,  the smell of hairspray, a horrible set of doubles, Andy Ruffell doing front hops and then being beat by Gary Prosser in the winners race.

For more North East tracks see BigPlinkys thread here -> http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php'topic=72968.0

Here's few crap pictures for those who remember sliding around on soft tires,

 not a bad desicion, Southbank track was Cleveland BMX clubs second track and one of my favorites. I remember some kid trying to "borrow" Dale Goodwins Hutch and Dale kicking the shit out of him, ended with a big show down when he came back with the local mafia, them were the days.

I was told the track had been obliterated when they built the A66 but it looks like it survived  think a visit is called for, now where's me knife proof vest ...

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=54.578078,-1.165983&spn=0.001141,0.002288&t=h&z=19

Any one remember Cleveland's first track with the twin down hill 180 berms, left then right  I can't remember the site but it turned out the ground was contaminated and the track was abandoned.

Shopper tyres with plenty of hair spray. Eston indoor track was bloody crackers, those wooden ramps ...

Daz, you should ask Moon to get Shads scrap book.

SouthBank was my fave track, I could never remember where it was sited. I'll have to have a gander next time I've  got an Armoured Tank in the area ;)

...the thing that sticks in my mind most about SouthBank?..  it was the 1st time I saw a Redline Carrera

My fave track to in its day, I remember seeing that Redline Carrera, was it when they had the national there? And was you there when Tim March was coaching and awarded Paul Sturrock the most improved rider award?

Yes, it was at the National. I remember seeing the guy on the side of the 1st straight sitting on the bike. I had a Redline MXII at the time, so seeing the Carrera got me all dizzy.

I don't remember Tim March being a Southbank, what year would that have been?

had to do the same thing in 1982 or 83 (not sure) at earls court, white walls and hair spray, all the factory boys were using
sunsilk hairspray but us lowly minnows were using tesco basics  :LolLolLolLol:and it hurt like fook when you fell off.there was never a better indoor track than outwell mill imo.

Yea he did a coaching session, probably 83 or 84, Paul Sturrock would probably know when.

The things we do for love eh? Risked life and limb to grab a couple of snaps of the old South Bank track today. I located the start but couldn't make out any features. Very grassy and didn't have time to start tramping around in the wilderness looking for jumps. Not a happy experience  :(

The launch pad.

Looking down the first straight.

Looking across to the finish area.

A crying shame! when I think back to it's glory days ...
