RL20 II opinion needed
« on: January 14, 2006, 02:45 PM »
I have a dilemma - I have just received an extrememly rare 1985 RL20 II in red. I think this was a prototype for the California red bikes in 1986. I have been sent the decals with it, but am unsure whether to put them on or not. I would like the board's comments for and against.

Here's the frame with the stickers:

Just for reference, here's an ad for dia Compe, with the decals not installed.

Please let me know what you think.

Townsend - eighties stickers belong on eighties frames, surely.

I know how rare the decals are - I have a few sets now.

Sorry Townsend - I thought your argument of not using 80's decals on an 80's frame a bit nonsensical - sorry. I only need objective comments.

I have another "proper" California red 1985 waiting to be restored - I think I am going to use the decals on that frame.

Hi

That's a sweet frame you lucky thing, and the decals look great. Personally, I'd go with the colour scheme and build it.

However, if you are never to build it up, I'd maybe get the decals mouted into a frame and them and the F&F built into a glass case / cabinet.

If built up though as a show bike, I'd use the decal colours into the build -

EG...You would have the following colours - RED, CHROME (SILVER), BLACK, YELLOW, WHITE, so would have a full on unique and colourful bike, so different colour - wheels, seat, brakes (even take them apart and change arm colours), levers, post, bars, clamp, cables, tyres, pedals, chain etc etc....to me it's just crying out for multi colour.

Thought about doing one myself, but don't have a special frame, enough bits or enough spare cash....so I'm f**ked... ;)

I am going to leave them oof, I think. I have another frame that I can use the decals on, and the one in the DC ad didnt have decals either.

Thanks very much for the input. Much appreciated.

Those are 86 decals - for an 85 frame, you need the decals without the squiggly lines. The ones Kent's selling are Redline approved repro's for an 86 frame - possibly turquoise or chrome.

That piccy of RL was from a Dia Compe Ad if my memory serves me right, It wouldnt supprise me if it was about the end of RL's days with Redline just before he signed with General and didnt want to promote his old sponsor.??

The red 85 frame was a test "prototype" for the California red that came about in 1986. The stood sotred in the back of the Redline warehouse for some considerable years until someone brought out all the old stuff. Thats how they came to light.

I am still sorely tempted to put the decals on, but I think it is better to leave them like in the advert. I would like to see what it looks like with them on though.

Leave the frame as it is.

If you're going to build it, do it the same as the one in the Dia-Compe advert, then it doesn't need decals. Besides, you have another Red RL20II to restore anyway. :daumenhoch:
