Silently determining who had true feel/instinct/awareness simply by watching peeps flatlanding at the church square in Chiswick... Our spot was right by the Turnham Green tube station. Whoever went off w/o drawing threatening body language from rush-hour pedestrians obviously  emitted instinct, control, and enough stylistic confidence as to keep a straight-laced banker type from questioning his current path and/or lifting his briefcase up to instictively protect his nads. I'm not even semi-joking...guys with obvious control never even conjured any resentment from the home-goers... but sketchy dudes (grems) warranted more than a few disgruntled comments. Still, we all supported each other for the love of riding and went to any lengths to defend any of our crew, talent or not. I kinda feel bad for screaming at all the old ladies on the sidewalks the way I did but hell, I was oblivious to life. Glad they never dropped and clutched ya know?

Hey Lee...do me a favor and find Amber. I've tried but I suck at computers yo. But find Webbie first!!! :daumenhoch: You find Webbster and T3 will live again! Damn you being the only other rider to hit 11 ft at Meanwhile. I was jealous dude, not gonna lie LOL. I helped build that shite and you came along and practiced 'til you ruled. Seriously though, so much respect and love to you especially now that I see you're still the same glowing, generous, and beautiful person you are and always were.

Kids today are spinning double-whip barspin tailtaps without a thought... :wtf:... meh..they got no style though. And no feel. They just pull shite like robots and have no idea where the roots are. I'm convinced that everyone who posts here remembers the roots. Always remember, always feel, always love. Glad I found this site cuz you guys remind me of what riding was always about. We rode for the love of riding and nothing else. That's why we get stoked on old friends and old pics and vids.  We rode those old comps not for trophies or (very little) money, but because we loved to hang out and watch others as they watched us. We were in our element. We old school die-hards will always have a common bond. We grew up together in the beginning of it all and we rode because our blood and soul told us to. As we watch the new-new school push themselves for money and fame, we will have the wisdom and experience to recognize the true apprentices of BMX ideaology and be capable of realizing who is here for the short and long term.

And remember. We had to learn it all the hard way =)

Roots, love, soul, instinct, feel, and heart.

For me it's got to be a UKBFA national at Carlisle in 86.

Firstly.......crazy eric "attempting" a 540 across the canyon, which he obviously wasn't going to make, and breaking the Quarterpipe in the process.

memorable for the comedy value, plus it was the first 540 attempt I'd ever seen...never mind the fact it was across the canyon too!!!! (I also heard it was Carlo's QP he broke?? Can anyone confirm??)

Second was seeing Neil Ruffell air overflat,  right over the balcony (9ft +) and blow the pro-class apart with his height and variations. He was absolutely awesome that day.

Somehow he managed to finish third behind Pepi and Craig C which drew boo's from the whole crowd (even from the locals who wanted pepi to win!!)

Could never understand that result!!!

I know the bfa judging could be dodgy but Neil (who was my fave rider of that era) did bail on two of his airs and never finished his run that day, i remember it well as i watched Neils run 100's of times as i had it on VHS. His first air was huge but he under rotated it and was thrown from his bike when he landed, his second air was a huge one footed invert, and his third was a one hand one foot which he bailed and slid along the floor.
If you seen his run at the previous national at Killingworth Neil's run was flawless and he took the win by a huge margin.
In those days flat and ramp runs were combined so you could win your ramp run but still not place overall.

Yeah...maybe I'm looking back at it through nostalgic glasses Steve. I remember the result not going down too well though. Probably because Neil seemed to ride with more energy and passion than anyone else!

If I remember rightly - you won your age class on that day didn't you?

We had some great times riding around London...busking in Leicester square with Greg,Lee, Jason etc.....made loads of cash that we spent in Taco Bell!!....also a fun night down in the Crawley Barn?...sleeping cold in the cars over nite..getting breakfast at Gatwick airport...and someone driving their car up the 1/4 pipe which we then set fire too using instant milk powder (the car not the ramp)...!!

I was at Crawley when Canning was fakieing his Escort Estate up that 1/4 , and remember the powdered milk thing. The Jam made the cover of R.A.D , my shoulder and foot did as well I think.

My friend Spike came second in B group, behind Angry Brown.

Julie McDonald anyone....??!!   Lovley girl.  The last I heard of her she was living with Ross Marshall.

With regards to your comments Greg, I feel BMX is a lifestyle choice now.  You get the bike, you dress a certain way, and you align yourself.  The world can be a shitty old place so hanging out with like minded people has always been the way.  We loved to ride, so we rode with people who also liked to ride. And at some point we all became the architects of these new riders world, and the BMX sub-culture was born (that borrowed quite heavily from Surfing and Skating respectively, while tipping it's hat to motorcross of course).  Now it's a more formed sub-culture and everything is more streamlined.  Perhaps even their riding styles.  Are we missing the nuances of their style, or are we just old farts?

Have to say I like the old rooty styles, but then I don't consider that a sleight against the new riders.  It's just the world I rode in at the time, and I recognise it for that.

Culture is far more disposable now, so perhaps they haven't got time for what we percieve as style.  Better that there riding though, and not sitting in front of TV's.....

These are just my own thoughts by the way, and are not intended to offend anyone!

Greg, when are you coming over to the UK?  I went past meanwhile the other day.  Always remembered with fondness.

Hope your well mate.

I only just realised who you are, Ross. Bloody Hell, etc.
Think we met a couple of times at comps, probably Alfreton. And/or during trips to Notts with Shaun Allison & Chris Hardy. Never did get one of your Life's A Sandpit shirts, maybe you should do some more.
Last time we spoke was at a Rom Day, early 90s. You said my tyres were too soft for riding the cloverleaf, so I got them up to about 90 at the garage. "Right, now hold on 'cos you're gonna fly around there now." Damn right I did, haven't ridden it since!
Think Slade was there that day filming on the camera he'd loaned from Sheffield college, I'm sure some of it ended up in Smart People In A Car Crash.
It was an amazing day, I'd just started riding (due to living) in London, and I remember being amazed that the folks I'd seen at the local comps were there at Rom. Plus I got to see Jason Ellis airing in the capsule (is that its name?) on a very nice black & red Sport.
Cool, great to make the connection, even though I feel a bit of a doofus for not knowing sooner.

When forced lookdowns suddenly became real lookdowns. Happened on Campbell's backyard ramp.

Every time I watch a BMX segment on  Fuel TV.

Learning that Slade directed 30 Days of Night! :4_17_5:

Showing up 2 seconds before every performance at the Circus with Canning.

Seeing Beetlejuice for the first time with most of the circus crew.

Getting drunk for the first time and crying nonsense to Canning, Vicki, and several other peeps who were present.

Hearing Metallica for the first time in Holland.

Seeing Webb pull the first double backwards decade.

First time I seriously hung up my back wheel. More important than you might realize.

Third lay...   Don't ask...

Seeing and using a 1/4 pipe for the first time.

Star Wars at 7.

Watching Lee go crazy over a chick named Ellen at the 87' Worlds and thinking  :wtf:  :2funny:

Watching Chingford locals start using drugs, not understanding, and then waxing hopeless years later praying those guys never went this far.

Stumbling upon myself on YouTube, discovering MySpace, and being sucked back into the only world that doesn't lie.

Remembering again, after 2 decades, what it was always all about.
