new school brakes

Hi all, just fitting my 1st new school rear brake and could do with some advice. I have a dc hombre going on a sunday wave. Could someone talk me through the order in which to do things with cable fitting etc. Only ever done old school before.

just whack it all on.

but some wise advice i got from twobobrob

don't mix up the springs, they are different colours for a reason.

only put 1/4 turn tension on each spring.

then it's just tweaking. trust me it's quite easy.

I had to tighten more than that so they didn't rub!

The springs tension in different directions, one for the left hand lug, one for the right - it's easy to figure it out when you look at them. Overtightening will bend the springs and you'll need new ones, so take it easy at first. Make sure you put a little grease on the bolts, and between the washers, it'll help the brake arms swivel smoothly.

Ok so I am probably totally thick but I have done all of the above and the caliper that is sprung to sit against the wheel rim is doing exactly that. My instinct tells me that the curved cable guide needs to be clamped onto the cable when you have set the calipers in the correct position but I am assuming that it is supposed be able to slide. Anybody?

The spring tesion should increase as the block gets nearer the rim. If they are clamped to the rim you have the springs in the wrong way

Spring tension is the last thing you do when you set up a U brake I set up mine without springs in to allign blocks & set cable lengths etc...

They should be sprung to pull AWAY from the rim.

Ahh, so I have a problem here as whatever way I seem to put the springs, one caliper is sprung to pull away from the rim and the other to pull towards

Are the springs 'curled' the same way when you compare them?
