How do you repair a fork crown?
« on: September 01, 2008, 06:36 PM »
I have a set of forks that has a small piece missing from the fork crown (where the crown race fits). I haven't tried a crown race yet, but can you repair them? If so how or is it not worth it?

Is it like a chunk missing or all around ? Will it mean the race is wobbling about Phil?  ???

if the surface the crown race mounts to has a dent in it, I would just ride as normal as long as the crown race still fits. Wouldnt worry about it.

If its bad, I suppose you could eithet stick is straight in a lathe and machine the level to match the groove or braze in a filling and file it down, possibly also with some lathe at the end to make it tidy.

I would be reluctant to apply too much heat, if its going on a rider. They are heat treated usually, after the assemly and "tigging" has taken place, I believe. Get it too hot and you will screw up this process.

One build a year, the only way to get it right. No rushing involved.

have you not got a macro button (the flower!)  ;D

I suggest you get someone who works with lathes to spin the whole thing off. Then make a shim for applying the crown race,

I have to use a shim to convert between JIS and ISO, made a copper shim, works a treat.
