Id like the opinion of fellow radsetrs on something thats been on my mind a long time...
If a new bmx company brought out a retro inspired bmx frame, what would YOU want to see on it? colours? Bottom bracket type? Headset type? Brake mounts? Looptial or not? etc etc.
This is a serious question dudes as Im having a little think about going down this route - Ive always wanted to go into bike manafcture - and would like to perhaps have a brand that is good looking, slightly nostalgic and with its roots firmly in fun. Id not be interested in competing with the big boys and there modern tuff - just something thats good and rideable for us older fellas out there who like their bike to look a certain way.
Anyway, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated,

im possibly thinking thats the way to go too Dan. If it was a complete bike option, then Id need to source a very good caliper brake - not sure whats out there though...

i know what your saying steve 990s for me on a retro build just dont like the look or instant feel
even thou levers have better adjustment on some.
what style are you thinking of frame that is race freestyle or along kappa lines

well i know of one frame i would deffo use as a template in a super lite tubing setup and i posted it to you about 1 month ago

Like the idea, when i found BMX again last autumn, couldn't understand why big boys were not doing it themselves? Biggest question for me would it be deemed old school legal?

Always loved chrome bitd, never had anything but, in terms of brakes, just discovered Pit bulls (came out after i gave up as a kid), best stopping power i've every felt.

Good on yer Steve, nice idea, and looking at the quality of your builds i'm sure anything you do will be absolutely detail perfect!

thanks magoo! Yep, im thinking maybe old school legal, at least have one frame/fork for that purpose, then possibly a 1.1/8" / ad990 /internal headset version for cruising and riding with all the benefits of new technology.
Anyway, any more thoughts, please let me know!

Loads of different personal preferences out there, I'm sure alot of us are riding what we can afford or what is available, rather than what we would actually like to ride, for me it'd be my old TA, but probably too short now-adays, and definately too expensive!

My personal preferences are loop tail, decent length front end, geometry that allows front up at the slightest touch, turns on a dime in berms but is stable in the air, (think to get that lot together is probably a mathematical impossibility), then, cos i'm still in '86 in BMX terms, dayglo orange cables, lever protectors bottom bracket boots, grips etc.....

pull all that out at an affordable price, and i think there is a whole market to be exploited out there with the impact of the olympics and more Dad's wanting to give it another go....especially with old school prices rocketing and availability being rare!

Always liked the look of slender tubes on the race bikes bitd, my Harry Leary Turbo is well skinny compared to todays bikes.

Always liked a nice gusset too!!

Look forward to seeing your ideas.... drawings, name etc etc

I Think That Maybe Steve, If You Was To Start A New Retro BMX You Would Need To Start A Retro BMX Firm Like 'Kappa'. I Think In Bike Terms You Should Make Something That Has Class, Carisma, Ledgendry Past, Excellent Qualitys Like Handling, Weight Etc. And Would Make Everybody Buy It And Love It!

can't fault alot of the current rides out there now, but as i ride flat only nowadays some of the bikes look too kooky.

would love a replica 26" haro sport for general cruising. modern gizmo's- internal headset, mid bb, ad lugs f& rear. and 26" 5 spoke tuffs.
all in white.

well we can all dream.

20" for tricks though.

Spanish BB, no need for american as no one really runs one piece cranks nowadays.
Definately not v brakes, they just look wrong on a small frame.
Skinny frame tubes, no crimped chainstays (you know, to give tyre clearance) it looks so cheap.
A seat high enough to sit on

As for this being a niche market, thats entirely what im aiming for - not to make a living and build a future , but to cater for and service the niche that we're all in!

Quite right Si.
Im gonna have a ball doing this - possibly a frame for old school racing. Maybe a frame for new school racing/dirt/ light park use.. But only with old school inspired colours/designs etc.
By the way Si, have you posted them Ukai rims to custom colour for me?

Not euro BB, reckon Mid as it is just US without the cups and seems to be the cheapest, also still quite large to keep the old look. Dont think there is a good caliper to stop us 12 stone plus adults. Some chrome and colours.
How about solid billet wheels like tuffs, get Orange County to make them
