Skyway pegs NITEMARE!
« on: August 14, 2008, 09:00 PM »
Went out to garage to tighten everything up n the Ruffell Rep.

Confused! I bought both 24tpi and 26tpi for front and back.
NONE fit the front wheel and I've boogered the threads in pegs!

Are the new front tuffs 3/8"? Someone explain please!

Depends upon what you mean by new

I have some plastic hubbed ones pre 2000 and they are 24 front and back

I have some plastic hubs ones 2006/7 ( from america) and they are 24 rear and 26 front

I think there possibly is another version thou

Colored tuffs site says "Standard 3/8" axles on both front and rear wheels. "
So how come the rear ones are okay?!

i got new placky hubbed ones and the front was 26tpi and 24tpi rear cost me a fortune getting the right axle converters
but i had an old alloy hubbed front one with flats on the axle and the 26tpi converter had to be forced on about halfway down the 24tpi didnt screw on at all :wtf:

hmm, seems to be 24 & 26. I originally had two sets of 24 and realised the front ones wouldnt fit so I eventually found 26tpi for front and now they dont fit and they are ruined!

24 tpi is 3/8" unf thread.
26 tpi is 3/8" cycle rate thread.

These are all very similar threads, the only way to tell is with a thread pitch gauge.

How shagged are the threads?
Are they stripped, or just rounded off?

The guy is sending me another pair of 26tpi, the threads are pretty messed up, difficult to see them.
Dont wanna make same error again though. Gini is mailing me too with the correct sizes as I bought the wheels from them.

With threads if you cant thread things on by hand there is something wrong.

Gently bently, dont force it  ;D

I believe the nuts that were fitted to the axles, have the size (ie 26 ) stamped in to them.

Try threading on a nut first to determine the thread size

I've only ever seen
24 tpi nuts come in 14mm
and 26 tpi traditionally come with 15mm nuts.

old skyways are interchangeble so if you're buying a second hand set- its possbile for them to be either.
your new school set should be same front and back?

14mm?!? Your on wrong track there mate. The only 14mm ones are for new school rides, the interchangeable ones.

This is 3/8" 10mm

nope - didn't mention 14mm axles
Stella Dave
14mm wheel nuts!

3/8 24tpi axles only ever came with 14mm wheel nuts (that i've seen).
i was just pointing that out as a good way of checking your axle threads. :daumenhoch:

I found out by chance, pegs with 2 threads on one peg......24tpi one end and 26tpi the other end so fortunatley got away with the Skyway axle problem...phew!!

They're DB Buddy pegs (sold at Halfords for about a tenner a pair) and have had no probs so far with Zytecs, spokeys and Skyways (placcy and steel hub) :daumenhoch: Not suitable for 14mm new skool stuff though.

If the threads were left slightly f'ed by fitting the wrong pegs before this could be your problem.

Get a nice accurate rule and place the inch measurements along the thread.
Count how many thread peaks there are to one inch. 24/26?

or

Place the front and rear axles parallel  together, so that the threads are meshing together, if the threads fit peak to trough nicely they are the same thread, if not, they are different pitch.

I think you said the rear is sorted now?
Just trying to help identify where the problem is.

or

A local bike shop/engineering shop/supplier may be able to help you i.d. the threads.

good thinkin with the rule, makes sense really! Threads seem to be okay as I've put original nuts back on.
Rear went on fine, it's def 24tpi. Front is mystery. I have another spare axle which is same size, pegs wont go on at all.

Right, problem solved! Front IS 26tpi, there was a combination of manufacturing debri and paint from the original peg coating.
Working the pegs on and off very gently. So take note or you'll wreck your pegs as they are VERY soft!

Glad you got THAT sorted! Got any pics of the bike?
Skyway pegs were sooooo bloody useless - as you say - VERY soft! I remember puttin a pair on and within a few hours of standing on 'em/ usin' them, the threads had stripped - pegs useless!
Thank gawd someone invented tube pegs....
