Raleigh.

I had a fear of Mongooses when i was younger, anyone who i knew who rode a mongoose was either a nerd or an only child and spoilt, so a mongoose was an evil and crap bike in my eyes.

i ditched my Grifter for a goose in 78.... that is because i was fed up hitting my NADS :'( everytime between 1st and 3rd gear!!!! and if that was enough catching them on that stupid foam seat were half had got wet, rotted and then fell off, leaving a nice step their.
Never got another Raleigh anything.

Mongoose, Raleigh Team Aero Pro's are nice (did I just admit that?), but does it beat this:

I think not.

define better.. technically I'd have to say the mongoose.. as a bike which opened up bmxing at a reasonable for all in the uk-burners....  both have their merits but as a personal (emotional?) choice I'd go with burners because thats what I remember about bmx's from my childhood when it came to bmx'ing

mongooses have usable (even today) geometry

a friend of mine regularly rides his 84 cali on ramps.
my 82 mongoose 2 is a good shape and size too.

they were just well designed

aero pro was a quality product albeit a tange and parts bin one.the standard shite geometry burners brought bmx to families on a budget and therefore raleigh made a mint.

the dirtburner ironhorses and "petrol station" bikes brought bmx to families on a budget

how much were burners anyway?

how much was a super burner? or an ultra? or tuff or mag . . . .
they weren't that cheap.

the appeal was that "raleigh" was a trusted (by parents) brand.
and it was the parents that had to fork out for them.

wonder how many of the members of the burner site lusted after a burner for Xmas 83?

I would guess that most were hassling mum and dad for a Kuwi, Goose or  TA and were gutted when santa bunged a lump of blue scaffolding under the tree...

i would have loved a super tuff burner
but they were too expensive

i had some POS called a "BMX Superstar"

cost about 60 quid. i really liked it though. it was a "bmx"

all raleigh did for bmx was flex their marketing prowess and get their bikes into all the shops at the right time.
perhaps if every kid who had a burner, instead had a Halfords Turbo or a Team Murray bike they wouldnt have chucked the towel in and quit riding BMX within 3 years.

BITD I would have said Raleigh as one of my early race bikes in 83 (I think) was the chrome & blue Pro Burner which was a very underestimated bike and I used to think that the Mongooses were very Americanised at the time.

These days it would be Mongoose as they are absolute classics and look superb when they restored especially the early motomags and of course the Pro Class

Its gotta be the burner, they were the most popular bikes in the uk   ;)

Dont be silly!! no burner even comes close to that, its true burners have a place in bmx history but to compare them to a high end goose is plain stupid   ;D
dont get me wrong  some of the burners i see on here are really nice, but when you take everything into account such as strenght, geomitory etc  the goose is in a different league.

gotta be mongoose
pretty much the daddy of BMX - well till late 80's at least

Raleigh took too long to join the BMX party
and even longer to get a good raceable bike to the market

 :knuppel2: mongoose rulesĀ  :knuppel2:

unquestionablly geese are better than burners.

lets be honest...i know a lot of you guys love burners from the emotional side of things, but the majority of raliegh bmx's were a pretty unusable bike with cooky geometry and bubble gum welds(the exception being the tange built frame and fork set, which makes them non burners really).
raliegh introduced the burner into the bmx market late in the uk, i mean what year was the first burner launched, 1982.
i got my first bmx in '79, a murray, which was turd, but when the burner came out, most of us who had been riding since '79/'80 saw it as a bit of a catalogue bike. SORRY.
feck im gonna take some shit for this post!!!!
mongoose, in my mind are the pioneers of bmx, along with se, redline, kuwie etc....how can you even ask the question which is better, you are talking about a company that refused to give up on the grifter, claiming bmx was just  a fad, all they did was market the burner well and aimmed it at the younger rider at budget prices. but as i say there are exceptions, the tange made frame sets, but compared to the heritage that mongoose have there is no contest

did i say that i think mongoose are better.....lol

ready.......INCOMING

Dave
haro, how do you do

Mongoose for me. Every kid by mine had a burner me as well but that don't make them good, but given the option we all wanted to ride our Friend's goose. BITD I didn't get the catalogue out and dream of buying a burner I drooled over the Geese and Ta's in BMX action bike :smitten: But to be fair they do deserve there place in British BMX history.
