It's finished!! Whaddaya think.....?
« on: July 23, 2008, 07:35 PM »
It's finally finished - my 1983 GT Pro "Nora Cup", totally original spec as seen in the February 83 BMX Action magazine. The tyres proved a bit tricky, and involved me pestering a guy in the states for a couple of months, but he finally buckled. The frame is original survivor chrome in great condition, although I did get Doug Taylor to rechrome the forks and seat post, as they were in a right state. Everything else, apart from the stem, is NOS. Check it out, I'd love to know your thoughts...

1983 GT Pro frameset
NOS Araya 7X rims
NOS Shimano hubs
NOS Tange headset
Tuf Neck Pro stem, polished
NOS GT Pro bars, unstamped, unknurled
NOS A'ME grips, early bubblefont logo
NOS Dia-Compe MX-1000 brakes
NOS Dia-Compe Tech 2 lever
NOS Tange bottom bracket
NOS Takagi crank
NOS Sugino spider
NOS Sugino chainring
NOS KKT lightning pedals
NOS Izumi chain
NOS Shimano freewheel
NOS Xcaliber seat clamp
GT seat post, unstamped
NOS Viscount MX seat
NOS IRC Z-1 tyres

Yeah, the IRC Z-1's were standard on a lot early 80's bikes like Champion C-2, the GT and the Torker 280. They also made the tyres for the DB Turbo. Pretty tricky to find - close to impossible in this condition. Now I'm going to have to take 'em off, as I actually want to ride this bike.

No problem Steve, it's just a little Canon Ixus 500 but I use the close-up setting on it.

What a top class build love the attention to detail...those tyres, just wondering how much you paid to have the forks rechromed , ive just picked up a VDC changa frameset survivor that needs a rechrome looking for a pukka job any pointers you could give would really help.
Cheers Russ

Thanks Russ!!
You could do a lot worse than Doug Taylor Metal Finishing, down in Somerset. It cost about £50 for the forks and seat post, including the return courier. Not dirt cheap by any means, but with him you know you'll get a quality job and peace of mind is worth a lot in itself. Give him a call, the number is 01934 820454.

Thanks fellas. I know the Helix Savers aren't universally liked and also not era correct but I wanted to do everything I could to keep the frame as scratch free as possible. But thanks for the constructive criticism - it's appreciated, and I'll more than likely leave them off the next build.

Cheers fellas
