odyssey black widow cranks?
« on: July 22, 2008, 10:42 PM »

Was wondering if anyone has any experience with these?

Im thinking of buying some for a project, but I havent ever seen any in the flesh.

Is the spider bonded to the crankarm like sugino 3pc etc for example or is it more like a spider that you would get on a one piece crank?

Also can anyone rate them, and reccomend a good place to buy ?

Thanks.

I think they did both styles, the early ones had the bonded on spider, the later one was removable.

I also think they are hard to get hold of?

Im guessing these are the newer ones?

https://www.jrbicycles.com/storefront/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=113

really pushing my budget, but better value than some of the alternatives for this "project"  ::)

Need something shiny, square taper and 165mm.

You mean something like this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ODYSSEY-BLACK-WIDOW-CRANKS-BMX-FIXIE-SINGLE-SPEED-RETRO_W0QQitemZ320277740688QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item320277740688&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318

yeah I saw those, thats what gave me the idea of using black widows.

But I need the polished ones.

thanks for the links anyway, will see If I can beat the Source price.

I would say they are built more towards children. They flex alot for bigger riders. My nephew has them on his race bike and they work well for him but I can feel them "give" when I ride his bike.

They look lovely cranks but I wouldn't use them for a rider as they seemed to flex quite a bit.

I had them on my robinson and although I never used them I fitted them on and you could feel the flex in them so i took them straight off.

Black Widow cranks have been around for quite a while... the earlier 90's ones [i have a set here im using] didnt have a spider with them, thay are just square taper 3 piece cranks. the spider [bonded or unbonded] was a later addition to the cranks , so if youre going old mid shool, find ones without a spider or a removable spider i guess.
I think they look great no atter how people use them!

I thought having a spider would be more old school than midschool?

I could use a sugino chainring like that robinson, and it would be a setup to alloy 3pc of the 80's like the sugino, takagi etc?

But with the midschool tech look of the hard edged polished crank arms?

don't know which ones i've got, made in usa, bolt on spider,175mm and they use a hexagonal spindle with sealed bearings(the bearings are pressed into the cup from the back so when all fitted to a frame, the bearings can't be seen)any ideas? :-\

You have the "phat" Black Widows I think, bigger spindle, fatter arms, twin pinch bolts, very nice cranks, they don't flex!
Do you grovel to your master? Do you beg like a dog?

just Google'd the phat black widows, but mine are not like them.the arms are still machined out like the b/w lites and only have one pinch bolt-spindle and bearings look the same.

I think you might have the Black Widow Pro's. They are basically the same as the Phat only older.

I'm not positive but I would say 94 to 2000?
