i dont think you could do it,surely the tolerances are too slight. 1/2" is too close to 9/16" the thickness on the wall of the bush (thats what they are called) would be too thin to thread on the inside and the outside.
helicoil just means you cut a deeper thread and then screw in a steel spring (sort of) into it. Its great for putting a steel thread into ally but cos you have to cut it deeper in the first place they wouldnt help this problem.
