HELP PLEASE!! SHAKY TUFF 2
« on: January 06, 2006, 06:35 PM »
my brother recently replcaed his chain on his gold supertuff burner.
in manhandling the wheel the axle seems to have come loose!
he says that it was slightly shaky beforehand but it seems to have worsened since this.
we got the bikes in december.
the wheels now shakes side to side on the axle. not a huge amount but noticeably so and enough to make riding difficult!
is the wheel a right off? can it be tightened or does the axle/bearings/hub need replaced!?
help please.
thanks in adavance.

losen the axle nuts that hold the wheel to the frame.....then using a cone spanner, tighten the cone nuts(these are on the inside of the dropout) until the wobbly spindle is cured, but leaving it loose enough that the wheel spins freely.

so no its not a write-off jusy a case of fiddling with ya nuts...ooeer missus

ok now that my fear is put aside any cahnce u can put that in dumb terms.
in pretty new to the scene so i dont have a cone spanner i dont think!?

i have taken the wheel completley off the frame, and the wheel moves from side to side on the axle,
tools at hand are a bike tool with all shapes of nut cutouts, and 2 barbell style tools for various nut sizes.
i was initially frightened as a raleighigh mag colapsed at the axle underneath me once and it was a write off! thanks for your reply!

if u can gimme a run thru i'll do it tonight.

ok easy.......there should be two thin nuts nearest to the hub on both sides of the wheel...plus the two axle nuts that attach the wheel to the frame.
you need to tighten the two thin nuts on one side of the hub. this is done by undoing the outer one, which acts as a lock nut.....then tighten the inner one towards the hub itself...then retighten the lock nut and re-fit the wheel.

have i made that simple or hard i cant tell.

hope ive helped and not confused you fella

You are going to need some more tools for sure . I would take it to a bike shop its going to be cheaper than a full tool kit :)

Cone tightening is not a big job and should only be a couple of quid , but riding it will indeed kill it untill you get it sorted :)

I havent seen a multi dumbell spanner for fkin ages lol

Rich :)

could be that the bearings are now a bit worn, due to the loosness of the nuts before.

is it when you pedal, or when it is freewheeling?
