i had a bike nicked once.  i saw it outside tesco about a year later with a hugh chain wrapping it to a rack but no actual lock.  nicked it back there and then. ;D ;D

 it was in silicon valley in North california not the UK. .. not too much bike crime around here I guess.
which is just as well. ive left my new school bike and laptop in the car loads of times unlocked and no-one bats an eyelid.
 
still i'm suprised it sat there for over a month and no-one nicked it. ..............until a scottish bloke came along  hee hee ;)
