Building a new Skatepark...
« on: July 03, 2008, 03:16 PM »

This is just an idea a couple of us were talking about,  not gone any further with it other than a few chats...

I know getting a skatepark project up and running is a very difficult thing, not to mention costly....

and apart from getting enough funding, finding a suitable location... and applying for planning permission...

then having a warehouse built...  then actually building the park... insuring the park... advertising an all that...

Plus the months/ years of begging letter's to get the thing started up in the first place!!

I dont want this to just be a pipe dream...  :-\

has anyone else had to go through all this to start their own park?

and could anyone give me any advice if we were to go ahead with this??

wot you reckon ???

Cheer's!!  :daumenhoch:

( I have a feeling the costs will will flatten this idea before it could ever become a reality! )  :(

Dave, to be honest I think the best way to do this is to do what twobobrob has done, get a group of riders, rent somewhere and build your own ramps, just for you. You don't have to worry about insurance (I assume). Without external funding skateparks don't make money, look after yourselves.

yeah... i am thinking this would be a bit much to get goin!!  :(

I just don't think i can let it go though.... i mean it was just talk like but...

i think i'd rather try my best and fail rather than never giving it a go...  :-\

Your probably right though...

I'll have to write/ email the local council prehaps??

Its something I've been wondering about as well since there are no decent skateparks within a 50 mile radius of Cheltenham (unless that is where you are thinking of putting one - if so I'll help build!!!)

I think this is something possibly nearly every Rad member has pondered!!

I was thinking the Northwest area ( liverpool mainly ) for a park...

The liverpool council have announced plans to build an outdoor park apparently...

so im not sure i could get them to fund an indoor park??

There has to be a lot of buisness men on Rad who would know how to go about this...

wot would i have to do??

There's no reason why a consortium of people couldn't own and run a private skatepark. No reason at all.

Apart from one;

a consortium of people have to be involved!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, the privately owned, run for profit parks are going to be pretty much a thing of the past soon thanks to cost and the influx of council owned outdoor concrete parks that ain't going anywhere for at least another 20 years.

If anyone out there is truly, truly serious about having a crack at a park for themselves, PM me with your ideas and we can bang heads for a bit   :)

Mount hawke skate park was built with funding from the lottery and the sports council. So it is possible but i think you have to register as a charity and not a commercial venture.

if you're looking for funding this is worth looking at http://www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/prog_myplace.htm
i'm involved with a group locally who have just put a bid in for this and it looks pretty promising.

There's a few ways to raise money.  Opening the park is seldom a problem - it's keeping it open that's the hard part..

if you wanted to build one in Oldham, you could have the support of a local councillor as in this thread from a local forum...
