A different look at "Joe Kid"
« on: January 08, 2006, 11:08 AM »
Had the opportunity to watch Joe Kid with a few friends last Thursday:

Left to right: Legendary racer Perry Kramer, Collector extraordinaire Tim Cook, Early 70s racer and collector Brian Gutierrez (Sodbuster), Former Webco and Mongoose factory racer Cash Matthews, San Diego super racer Johnny Johnson formerly of OMAS/Dirt Slinger fame, myself and very cool guy and still aggro Jason (AKA 26 incher)

along with another BMX legend Jeff Utterback and early 70s Northern California hot-shot Mike Rush (Spike)  2nd and 5th from the left respectively

I was late and was desperately trying to contact the guys with little luck.  Could not find a public phone that was working and when I did, the number 6 did not work :)

I finally made it  and we hung out at a Sports Bar near Cash Matthews'  hotel for a while and  had some great conversations.

Johnny Johnson put the moves on the VERY young waitress and we kept her entertained.  When she asked Cash Matthews about his "medallion" he responded that it was a "female repelant"

Eventually we ended up at Sodbuster's house and were treated quite nicely by him and his wife (THANKS MRS SOD!!)
Checked out his collection:

We rode one of his bikes and PK entertained us by doing rear wheel coaster brake hops.

We all sat down and looked at some awesome historical pictures from waaay back in the day.

Eventually we sat down and watched Joe Kid.  The movie itself is great as those who have seen it can say, but watching it with PK, Utterback and Cash Matthews' running commentary (since they were there) was incredible.

Hearing about the PK evolution straight from the man himself was great, hearing JUs take on GJS and other matters was also awesome

One of the best stories of the night was Cash Matthew's retelling of the story when Skip Hess or Russ Okawa (?) called him in Oklahoma asking if he wanted to ride for Mongoose.  Cash's answer was "Hold on, let me ask my mom....mom!!  Can I ride for Mongoose"  "Ok dear"  :)

Thanks to everyone, having you guys as friends, is just simply the best

Actually,  I did with some of them...:)

Another great moment was when PK was making a point about the movie. He tells Johnny Johnson, "Hey hold my beer." Johnny looks at PK and says "What you really  meant was  "Here hold my beer........ BITCH!"

TIM said, "He's got a bike named after him. Hold his beer."

 Freaking priceless

Tim Cook didn't race but he does have THE collection of BMX bikes  (except for my Kawasaki)  :)

Another classic moment:

PK, Cash Matthews, Spike, Utterback, the 26", Johnny Johnson, Sodbuster, Tim, and myself are watching Joe Kid.

As we watched the Yamaha Gold Cup portion of the DVD, the mighty Oz can be seen waving the starting flag as he squeaks in his Peter Brady "I'm going through puberty" voice. Being the trooper that he is, Oz is wearing a checkered flag shirt. Out of the blue, Utterback blurts out "Don't they make those shirts in men's sizes?!?!"

It was silent for a second, everyone turned to JU and lost it!!
