Anodising MX brakes...

I searched old topics, but can't get an answer...

can MX 900/1000's be anodised without having to remove the quick release (as its riveted on)?

And are the original black ones anodised or painted?

Sorry JT....I've been thinking, and its clear - cant anno them, and black ones are annodised...

right now, next question -

If the quick relase had the rivet ground off so callipers could be annodised...

could someone machine a bit to replace the riveted par? My mate works for a machine shop and might be able to help..just thinking how many crappy old MX's could be salvaged and made as good as new..

Am I being to ambitious? anyone tried doing something similar?

The anodising process requires that no other metals be present so you would have to remove the quick release arm, it would be possible if you have access to a machine shop to make a similar rivet so I would got for it if I were you  .

Just been checking out an old removed rivet and it looks as though with the right tools you could do it. When you put the release arm up it locks and when you pull it down to release it unlocks, if you had one fabricated i think you would probably loose the groove and the ability to lock the arm when it is released. I suppose if your not racing your not bothered about having the arm locked open. There must be a thread on here where someone has already done it.

Fishface has refixed a quickrealease jobby .He had a red anno caliper re-annod black

had these done but they didn't have quick release. only aly can be anodised on its own as martyc said.

On the subject of black DC parts I've seen painted and anno black on levers and a caliper I had a while back was painted black (all were defo original finishes). I think DC started painting black in the later years of production, that's my guess anyway.

Might go down the painted route then, lot less f'ing around...but in years to come, when MX's are even rarer, I'm sure re-riveting them might become viable...

i have painted some and have also had some powder coated. the powder option turned out pants as it is to thick and makes them look rounded and you lookse some of the sharpness of the 'MX' logo. Which leads me onto my next problem. How the hell do you paint the little 'MX' logo without making a pigs ear of it. I have tried 5 different ways and none look right or have made a mess of them and had to strip, paint and try again?

I painted a dc seat clamp pink BITD...

to fill in the MX , i simply painted with a fine brush, then used my finger to carefully wipe away all the smudges. Looked quite good, but unfortunately i stripped the enamel paint off to return it back to blue, so cant show pics...

to be honest i was lucky 

when the lads at custom colour stripped the red off  , the colour stayed in the logo and when they re annod them black it didn't take on the red in the logo 

so more luck than good judgement
