GT Pro Performer ????
« on: January 06, 2006, 01:32 PM »
I was interested in this GT Performer as I had one BITD but something doesn't quite add up (Apologies if it's someones on here!)

1) Didn't think Performers came out until 1983 or 1984
2) The picture of the frame shows what looks like brake cable guides under the bottom tube. My 84 Performer that I had BITD definitely did not have brake cable guides and I didn't think they started putting them on until 85/86 ish and then a bit later they put them on the forks.

I think it may be a later frame with early forks.

Any ideas or have I got it wrong?

Think they came out in April 84 and it is a later frame (rear with earlier forks. Although my Performer (which I bought new in late 84) has a guide on the rear of the forks, so they didn't run them for long before the fork guide was added see.

Note no brake bridge behind the bb.

The GT performer with the centrepull brake behind the bottom bracket and cable guides came out in 1987 and were made in Taiwan.

mmm I thought so.
Mine was bought Nov 84 and definitely had no cable guides on the frame or forks, and no brake ridge behind the BB.

I have contacted the seller with the correct year information.  Lets see what he says (if anything).

Agreed. All early frames also only had 3 holes on the rear drop outs, and the seat stays are in the middle of the top tube (not level with the top) as my June 84 version shows. Oh, and the serial number is on the drop outs and not on the BB - the one on ebay is definately far east and late 85/6.

Can you date a performer by the frame number like you can the race frames??

Yep. On the early ones the first 3/4 digits were the month and then the year...but once production went to the far east they went non-year specific, so it's a little more difficult.

Now that is the sweetest GT Performer F+F I have even seen retrogeezer

I've been thinking about building me a Fiola replica for some time and thought I had found my next project when that Yellow Performer turned up on the bay. . . then I looked closer  :(

Still . . . . . all good things come to those who wait I suppose !!!

Hi there its me and my Frameset you are all slagging off, I was not a member but someone kindly put me onto this site.If Ihad known about this place before then all would be OK.

I must admit what some people have said about me in here and in questions via e-bay is a bit much but I feel as though I must appologise about the listing. I have now realised its a pile of scrap and will skip it right away.    :D

Whats funny is you all doubted I would answer you and then when I did what I considerded the correct thing in removing it, I was also castigated as havng a rant. Sometimes you just cant do the right thing.

Seriously what is it ? I had 2 GT Performer framesets and when I had them powder coated I am beginning to wonder if they put the older frame with the newer forks and vice versa. I never really checked before because they were both wrapped in bubble wrap and they were different colours. If they did someone got a bargain cos I only listed the other as a 87-88 Performer and it only brought about 80 quid. I was going to build both bikes but I am emigrating and have to sell loads of stuff. I sold my coaster skyways and flight cranks before christmas it was a sad day. The stems on my other auction are off the bikes also so that may help with the dating?

I will cut the drips off before I list it again,  ;D The coating is excellent BTW. It is very hard to coat tubes and get a consistent finish apparently the man in the place told me.
