Profile box cranks- 135 quid!
« on: June 10, 2008, 06:03 AM »

Hi dudes,

Prob slow off the mark here, but have you seen profile is remaking the old box cranks  :smitten:

What years were these made from / to?

I've ordered a set for my Group 1 build, but I think they may be too early for that?

Cheers

very cheap at 135 i think...and well documented on here already..

these are re runs of the gen 2 box crank i think..the gen 1 had no indent for the sticker and were truly box like in there shape...

these are also very limited in number , with the number of the set printed on the inside of the crank arm.

Identical to originals apparently..

my set are on order too.

where you ordered yours from?

I think these are Gen 1 re-runs but I could be wrong. There is all kinds of debate about early profile cranks. Some even conclude that there is even a Gen 1.5.

As far as I know, the Gen 1s were like above, the Gen 2s look much closer to current profiles, but still with the sticker indent, and the Gen 3s were as current, with engraved arms (either "GT" or "Profle").

have some gen 1 profile's on my DY. no indent.

gen 2 on my vdc, indent.

i agree about there being versions after the gen1, but i thought the gen 1 were the super square no indent cranks.

Haha, My knowlage of 80s stuff, esp early 80s is very thin. My mistake.

I have got 2 sets of early profiles, one more boxey than the other but they both have got sticker indents. I guess they are Gen 2 and Gen 3s.

All I can tell you is that they were before the 90s, and that is all I really know about.

Here you go:

My "earlier" Profiles- Very flat sides, right down to the pedel end. Sticker indent.

My "later" Profiles-  Very close to the shape of the GT stamped ones, but these have the sticker indent

Nice pics dude, thanks very much fella.

The ones i posted the pic of must be the 1.5 gen, full wrap, with the sticker indent?

What do you think?

All profiles are "full wrap"? Its just a style of late 90s Redline 401s that werent full wrap.

I guess the new ones are just Gen2. Very box shaped with with the indent.

Mine must be Gen 2 and Gen 3, unless there were any others in there as well.

Compare the pedal wrap of yours to the repros.. the repro's wrap right round like your earlier ones...

Weeksy, answers are there :

http://www.profileracing.com/news_full.php?id=594

I would add a 2.5 generation (the later Alex ones)
His earlier cranks are Gen 2, the ones reissued this summer.

Yes, who am I to correct the guys at Profile ??  :LolLolLolLol:

Yep, nice guys at Profile, last year I went to the states on holiday, before I went I contacted the asking them if they had a retail store. They replied saying no store, but if I contacted them when I was there, they could give me atour of the factory :daumenhoch:
Unlucky for me my wife had other plans for our time there :'(

I read that a while ago and thought at the time there was one missing (the later set that I have got)

So it looks like:

Gen 1 - Made from a folding a flat sheet into box section, no sticker indent
Gen 2 - The same as Gen 1 but with a sticker indent
Gen 3 - Made from a tube, but still quite box shaped, with sticker indent
Gen 4 and beyond - Rounder tube, engraved arm.

OK, who is going to Email Profile and put them straight  ;D

This is a useful thread as well  ;) .

http://www.os-bmx.com/forums/index.php'showtopic=16708&hl=hutch+cranks

Basically it comes down to whether peeps count the Hutch/Profile ( non indent ) as 1st Gen Profile cranks or not  :) ( some do some don't it seems ) .

Profile do. They even said that their "Gen 1" were the same as the hutch cranks.

So profile put someone elses name on their cranks a few times. (Hutch with Gen 1s, and GT with Gen 4s).
That is such a cop out for a company to put their name on something someone else made, and is also selling. Why bother?

Gen 2 I think (or Gen 1 if you only count non sticker indent as Hutch ones, like some people seem to).

I think I read that they are making the new ones using the actual tooling, using the same stock thickness sheet, and in the exact same way. Pretty cool really.

You see even Profile don't know what they're on about ! lol . The square boxy ones were 80-81 they say not 79.

Yeah, but although we have already exposed mistakes in their website, they could well have got the tooling, and some of the very first protypes made in 1979.  ???

Only joking Alex , it's just that it seems the makers can't get all versions in the pic/order that were available  :LolLolLolLol:

I'm guessing 79 tooling was non indent , repros are indent .
