whats peoples thoughts on these? do you think they are worth the money?

is anyone on here running a freecoaster?

i have a federal one and its mint
alot of people say they blow the bearings and there rubbish but if you know how to take em apart a keep them maintained they stay smooth. ive had mine since about christmas now and its still really nice, i just open it up every 2 weeks or so.

I've had a go with one but I dont ride backwards enough to need one.Feels odd - just like an old coaster.But without the brake.If I remember you have to pedal back slightly to 'engage' the freecoast bit when going backward.Then if you put pressure on the forward pedal it acts like a normal hub.

i love them and run one,they take a while to get use to but if you stick at it they are great.
i also take a standard set up rear wheel with me and swop them over on the odd occasion.

my khe reverse broke, luckily i was messing about on the flat as it realy caught me out,

i had it set up with the 3 washers so it engaged quick like a cassette hub, one minute it was fine then it slipped bad (almost a full crank turn) and then went stiff (could barely turn my wheel).

i have taken it apart but haven't found the problem yet

I think a lot of the problems with them is the general lack of understanding of the servicing & adjust-ability of disengagement that the people who set them up have.

Not dissing the hard working lads who build these wheels, all new technology takes time to familiarise yourself with, when that happens I reckon we will see an in their popularity.

just use an oldschool coaster hub 36h and lace it to a new school rim
take some of the guts out and do an un-brake conversion and bobs your uncle
you still need to run the arm party thou but works just the same.

  freecoasters aren't 'new technology' dude, they've been around for years!

I had an ACS freecoaster in the mid 80's , they were proper then, you could switch between a freewheel style, and coaster style.

I think they can be quite reliable in my experience, you just have to know a few basic principles of the workings of the hub & you should be fine

Ffwd to around the 5.20 mark. The only problem is that George French says it will be available soon, but estimates vary between month and years as to when it'll eventually arrive.

well,

i was a bit bored today so i laced up a nankai 48 hole hub and rim and it weighed 1.44 kg

compared it to my 36 hole khe reverse and hazard lite wheel which weighed 1.43 kg......

just food for thought
