I managed to get hold of an SRE a little while ago and just finished it's resto. I raced in SW region and new Steve Sanders.

Thought I would call a freind of mine who used to ride one and show him.

When I spoke to him he told me he still had his 24" in his parents loft!

So just took some pics of them both together. And hes gonna bring it to MK this year.

Heres some of the pics- this may bring back memories for anyone who raced in the SW, or raced against Steve Sanders.

All the 24" needed was air in the tyres and a new pair of grips after 24 years in the loft! Not bad.

i remember a little about the SRE i think martyc had a bit of info as he has a memory like an elephant.
very rare and in terrific condition.

Yeah Steve was a hard rider, hes used to push lots of weights. I was a good few years younger so never raced him.

Here in Weymouth I new of at least 5 SRE f&f BITD but sadly I only have 1 left that I haven't managed to track down yet. All the others have been lost.

Does anybody know any others that were in the SRE team?

Heres some pics I've found of SRE riders but can't remember names?

Bottom 2 picture were mine. SRE rider 568 is Wayne Fox, (used to live near Alton), and hax "Foxy" on the back of his race pants. Me 169 next to him. Racing at Bournemouth in what I think was the first ever NBMXA SW Region regional. CW guy in Front I think was Graham Merry. Dad was one of the founder members of Winbourne Club & Track..... Hope that helps.....

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the info. I think CW guy must have been Russ Merry, as in the cruiser pic above, because Graham Merry was the father as I remember it and the guy who owned Hotwheels BMX shop in bournemouth not far from the track at iford lane. They were the distributors for CW, VDC and lots of other names.
Hotwheels is still a BMX distributor but they don't have the shop anymore, its still run by Russ and his brother Neil. http://www.hot-wheels.co.uk/about/

Been thinking the No.8 rider was called John something?

Graham Tavender I think it was. Dad definately had something to do with Wimbourne, and also regional NBMXA organisation, hence he got plate 101, (the first number issued for the SW region. Russel Merry was in the age class above me so defintely not him.

As for the last picture, I still remember Steve Saunders spotting me taking pictures form the middle of Southampton track, and shw boating for me a few times...

Blimey its a small world, bumped into Russ Merry today at the bmth track his two kids were having a go and he had a roll around, even more conincidently we discussed SRE's !

number 8 may be Jon Webber but could be wrong .

Thanks Mooro, Jon Webber was the name I was after. He was a year older than me and raced my mate.

Wierd that you should see Russ Merry and discuss SRE's! He always had all the gear, I guess thats a no brainer.

no 8 was me jon weber, thanks for the link jonny boy, great memories!! brilliant to see the SRE. Steve is still local and last i heard he was a taxi driver (not such a hard rider these days!!!)

That 20" is just amazing, a beautiful bit of craftmanship, and a shame they weren't better known bitd. Are those forks the originals too?

I remember the SRE team came to a race meeting down in Newquay circa 83/84 and admiring the bikes then. Don't recall the name of the rider in my age group though, would have been 15 age group I guess.
