Rust - is it an issue?
« on: May 27, 2008, 11:27 AM »
Hi,

I'm looking at getting a new BMX and have a few options lined up, one is the WTP Trust which I tried last week and felt nice to ride and I like the look of.

I love the look of the Raw frame but from emailling WTP it seems that it isn't a frame which has gone through the full paint process. Apparently the frame is done with a pre-process coating, like a matt undercoat style and even they say the frame will rust slightly quicker than a bike which has gone through the full paint process.

Now, if this is going to rust "quicker" (How quick is quick I wonder) am I being foolish for getting this partly because of the looks or should I go for the black version which has full paint on it (Although it still comes with the Raw forks and Bars)? One thing I thought of is that I may change the frame at some point or even get it resprayed in the future.

If it does start to rust, is it an issue? I've searched the forum and there are a lot of posts about rust on Chrome bikes but none on non-chrome bikes I can see so just wanted to check the thoughts of you lot to see what you thought?

ive used my standard for the past year with no paint or even clear coat

not found it a problem , its not like i have to ride it so it doesnt intentionally get used in the rain , but it has been rained on

i removed the paint with a wire wheel and polished to a near reflective finish , it has tarnished over the past year but i keep the rust off with a coat of gt85 and a quick rub  down with a scourer every couple of months

about 4 or 5 years ago it was popular to just use a clear coat but it scratched easily and as it was difficult to see the scratch nothing could be done about it . eventually the rust spread under the clear but you couldnt get to it to remove it

if i see rust on mine a quick rub and its gone  :)

its worth noting that my bikes live indoors

it should really be clear coated like my Proper proclaimer frame....that way it deffinately won't rust.....but hey some peopl ethink it looks cool with all the rust on them  :idiot2:

if they say it's not a proper clear coat job then i'd go for the paint finish

pickle have you put a scratch in it yet ?

you do know they dont put any extra coats on , its just the same thickness of clear without the paint underneath

i do have to admit though that i do only get to ride it about 2 or 3 times a month!  so mine might not be a good example of how they age?  plus i do clean it down afterwards which not everyone does??  :-\

I doubt I'd ride it more than 4 times a month with the other riding I do so its perhaps only a fair weather / indoor bike so maybe I'm worrying about nothing. It'll be kept indoors so doubt it will be an issue overall.

Thanks for the input.

Why not go for a rat look rusty bmx like these old VW's...  Would look cool with a rusty frame and polished everything else, much like the old beetles with chromed empi wheels.
