Fiiting headsets and BB's
« on: January 02, 2006, 09:57 PM »
On my builds I always like to fit NOS headsets and BB's (mostly tange) but they always need 'fettling' as they never fit easily. I have measured with a micrometer and they are always way too big to ease on and as I don't like to hammer them because I want to keep the perfect finish of the paintwork so I end up using a dremmel to lightly skim the cups. Is this normal behaviour?

How do you guys put them in - nice and easy or by teasing with a lump hammer?

they are supposed to be super tight because of the pos and neg stresses put on them....but for show bikes im sure the fettling is fine.
but a fettled headset on a rider could result in a snapped frame.

I like to use new stuff too, but I don't bother with the dremmel, I just whack 'em in with a plastic mallet. Not had any damage yet. Just make sure they are nice and square with the bracket, before the first wallop  :santa_afro:

For headsets I use a length of threaded bar, washers and nuts.
