white alloy hubbed skyways

on to a resto of a pair of white tuff 2s now,the 1st picture still shows some evidence of brake rub after 1/2 hr with 800 grade wet and dry, the wheels were refinished by some fool in a rather nice shade of Ford diamond white, this was removed by rubbing down for 2 hrs and 2 dips in the dishwasher on a 65 deg  cycle, the hubs were also concaved from massive overtightening , this has now been pushed back out so all rivets are 99.9% level, the second pic shows the wheels as they are now before (time allowing ) being bleached over the weekend...

self made press, using a 1/2 inch drive bar, vice, padding etc..... and it worked

I'v got a few pairs I'm working on at the mo, giving them a good scrubbing    Can someone please explain the best way to cover the hubs as I fooked one up last time I put a pair in bleach

Chris, I used petroleum jelly which is water-proof ... use a brush to coat the inner hubs too

bit wet and dry and polish that alloy hub will be as good as new

If you're not too fussed about having bolt-on hubs, you can drill out the rivets, remove the flanges, then put them back in the wheel with the bearing retainers etc facing each other (back to front).  Use the old rivets to hold the flanges in place, then take your axle and slide it through both sets of flanges and carefully tighten the nuts up.  This will pull the hubs back to their original shape.  Take your time but if you do go a little too far you can always flip them the right way round and reverse the process.   Get yourself some replacement bolts and you're sorted.  If you can't find a long enough bolt threaded bar/locknuts works equally well...

If you can't bear bolt-on hubs, go for the home-made press option...
