bought from ebay for 11 quid approx 4 hrs work and from this

to this

bearings were seized as was the freewheel, all stripped and regreased new bearings etc, process was , dishwasher on a 65 deg cycle, bleached for an hour, sanded completely with 1000 grade wet and dry, boiled in 2 ebony black dylons for 2hrs and left to cool over night, resanded, dyed in 3 more ebony blacks for 2 hrs and then wd40,d and dried and finally polished with autoglym, i now have a useable 100% straight tuff2 that will replace a later sealed bearing tuff 2 for that original look...any white marks on the photo are from the camera flash , i have also scratched the tube side of the wheel with a sharp knife to see how deep the black has sunk and no white is evident so hopefully no brake rub will remove the dye ... time will telll...

I'd watch out if i was you mate , I tried dying a yellow seat and it turned a shite orangey colour

, stfc has done a white to black so had no issue with colours mixing

I got a 'cheap as chips' Skyway cooker. I'll stick up a thread, costs about a tenner.

heres my old dye-matic

ended up with a small BBQ underneath to keep the heat going

worked a treat these were the cheap white wheels alans knocked out a while back

Ive tried the old oil barrel thing and had no better success with what i have just used , what works best i have found is the initial rubbing down, then put the wheel in a kids toy bucket... the bottom of which is exactly 20.5in so they sit in a treat , put the wheel in add LOADS of salt shaken all over the wheel its self add a kettle full of water over the wheel , while boiling another couple of pans full to totally immerse the wheel (10 ltrs ?) add the dye before adding the extra boiling water, pour in the extra 10 ltrs ish stir and turn the wheel every 10 mins or so for an hour and then leave,repeat if neccessary... this is the 6th set ive done and this method has been the best...

Sounds like you did exactly what I did with my yellow ones, getting them back from badly sun bleached yellowy-white to proper yellow. Good job there, they have come up a treat

the results from your way speak for them selves

as you say keeping it as hot as you can for as long as you can def helps it no end

Cut down oil drum is what I use. You should be able to pick one up from a fuel oil depot, look in your yellow pages for one local. Cut it down and use cat litter to soak up any remaining oil in the drum. Clean that lot out and away you go with water, dye and salt.

Peeps willing to put the time & effort into reworking/restoring/dyeing/whatever ! lol an old school part and not resorting to buying sh1te new tuffs for an OS build .

BTW , Yellow Elina's dye black perfect

( and I heard Elina's were tougher to dye than Kashi's

what ya done man !!!!!! a original rivetted white alloy hubbed rear skyway tuff and you dye it black

i bloody forgot to bid on it as that was deffo was gonna be bleached back to white. not fooking dyed black as they are available

to be honest it would have never come up with bleach, i have done white tuffs before and this particular wheel (see the 1st picture) seemed to have what i can only describe as brown moles over one section of the wheel (cuprinol or creosolt * spelling) on it , possibly where it was kept in a shed , i dunno,but they hadnt come out up to the dyeing stage, any how it has covered 100% in black and is going on me treader later , pics to follow, ... will now have a set of tuff 2,s with
