Mate - I only got back into riding in the summer and went through this dilema too!
I'd strongly recommend you go for 661 Elbow DJ and Knee DJ pads...comfy, very thick (good when you impact) and they have a hard shell so they slide (unlike some of those new neoprene chicken filet things). I've fallen a few times on mine and I still have my elbows and knee's!
I'd also invest in some good shin guards - again go for something with a hard shell - the new Fox BMX Shin Guards are good.
The advantage of the hard shell is that it spreads the impact...and when you are old like me that's good!
Here are a couple of links:
Shin Guards:

Elbows:

Knees:

Before you buy, try Halfords as they were selling the 661 Elbow DJ for £12.99 and the Knees for £16.99 a while ago!

bauer roller blade knee pads £10 at any sports retail outlet, i used to wear the same ones playing street hockey in the late 80's, one of the best protective knee pads & you can fit them under your jeans

I use EVS Shin/knee protectors, they are hard shell, really strong, really comfortable and very affordable. Here is a link to the place I bought them, type 'EVS Option' in the quick search box and click on option 1 or 4.

troy lee designs t-bone knee pads,expensive but the best.about £55 i think.
i've rode downhill mtb's for years and these are the ones i use they dont slip down or round your knees no matter what you hit and ther'e super comfy.
