Launch Ramps from edsrails.co.uk
« on: February 27, 2008, 04:10 PM »
I've just bought a Launch ramp from edsrails.

Anybody bought one off them before?

It looked okay on ebay.

I need practice over jumps.  I keep pulling to one side and my bottle is weak.

I thought instead of building a ramp out of scrap wood and a few bricks like BITD, I would buy something with a little better build quality.

I did look at the Mcgill ramps etc, etc but they didn't look long enough for me.   I used to remember going over ramps as a kid and if they weren't as long as your wheel base or the transition wasn't right it could be a real jolt as you hit the ramp.

Size is 400Hx1200Lx600W.

Cost £36.80 which isn't cheap but its not extortionate either.

I was looking at the kicker version of the ramp which was the same height,  but I thought I'd start off small before I try leaping tall buildings.  I'll go for distance instead of height.  At least until my confidence and ability returns.

All I need now is a quiet grassy area to practice on.

http://www.edsrails.com/acatalog/copy_of_Trick_Boxes.html

Its the £24 one.   Its the same dimensions as the LR1 but crappier wood.

Its nothing special.  I just couldn't be bothered making my own.

Plus wood is expensive, it doesn't grow on trees you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need to learn to fly before I can learn to land!!!!

It should help cure my lean when airbourne and help me learn how to absorb the shock of landing again.

Then I can move onto the big boy's ramps.

i had the lean problem ages ago and i found that i was covering my rear brake with two fingers so when i pull up for the jump i was pulling harder with my right arm, stopped covering my brake and it cured it

Sorry Moley....... sure it's summat to fly off, but a baby wedge ramp like that isn't going to teach you anything   :(

Have some fun on it, but next time save your money and stick it in your fuel tank.  Get travelling brother!!  You'll learn way more in one park session with some mates around you   :)

Then again,  give me a shout next time you are after a ramp - I'm a former ramp builder   ;)

Look, I have to learn somewhere.   I had a look at the doubles at Coppull and my brain froze.

As a spotty yoof, I wouldn't have even looked twice at it.  I would've just jumped the damn thing.

I have to re-learn the things I once knew.

I have had only had about 2 hours riding experience on a BMX and what I knew 20+ years ago has desserted me.

It will help me learn to jump without any danger and will help build my confidence again.     It will help with my timing of jumps as I spring off it to get some air rather than just ride off it.    As a basic learning tool it couldn't be better.    When you first ride a bike and you build a ramp.  You dont build it 10ft high, you start off small and build your way up.

They say "its just like riding a bike, you never forget" Blah, blah.   But it isn't,  Riding a bike is easy,   Re-learning timing, control, balance etc, etc takes time.

All you riders who have been riding the last 20+ years might have got fatter or slower but you wont have lost any of your basic skills.   I'm not that fortunate.

You might scoff at me with your fancy ramps and splines but out of small acorns grow mighty oaks!!!

I see what you are saying dude, but I what rob is saying too.

I'm  sh1t on a bmx and i reckon I could take a run up and bunny hop almost as far as you'll go off that ramp. to me that's a landing ramp not a launch ramp. but if riding off it helps your confidence then go for it dude.

it's riding isn't it? and that's all good.  :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:

i would've thought all you'll do on that ramp is to just roll off it rather than jump......i'm sure you could create or find better natural jumps around in wooded areas or something??  take a shuvel and make something in the local woods/trails??

I haven't got anyone to ride with.    No one up here is into BMX.

I only started to get into it 6 months ago.

I also live in the countryside.

Digging a few ramps in the forest ain't a problem....But riding alone and injuring myself is.

BTW, I never ever just rolled off a ramp when I was a kid.

I used to get crazy height of a 1ft ramp

I always sprung of it like a salmon going up a waterfall.

Improves your timing no end when you don't have a natural kicker to get you airbourne.

This is old school BMX.

The dimensions of this ramp is near identical to all the portable ramps being sold BITD.

Like this one :-

Good fun to have a little play and get some confidence
and we have all been there , riding again and the act of riding around getting a feel for the bike again is great

but remember that if your goal is to wizz round a track then be aware that riding has changed and tracks with it
landing back wheel first ,a given bitd is not so true now
and the way to ride has altered so much its almost like learning agin
i went through it and my goal of airing a quarter was realised before i fell and injured myself pretty bad
i have bottled it now, dont mind , i enjoy rolling around and riding the old school round london, rather than trying to master spines lol

I know what you mean about tracks.

Coppull BMX track didn't have 1 Tabletop.

All jumps were double variants with dips in the middle.

Even the step up to tabletop had a dip in between.

Not easy for a learner who just wants to get a little air to practice.

The 9-10 year old kids seemed to tackle them easily though.

Maybe I'm getting too old for this!!

The tracks are far mor advanced and technical , as are the bikes and teqniques
front wheel first landings,manuals
you can get round them rolling but a lot of tracks are very unforgiving to an old school style

that ramp is proper oldskool, like a plank of wood on bricks, which i used to jump on my burner when i was 10! curbs and grass bits in front of houses are more fun to jump  :daumenhoch:

your more likely to hurt yourself with that. from the kick you get from the base of the ramp i bet you nose dive off the end. better forking out for the transitioned one

Only time will tell,  I didn't want the kicker as I didn't want to get too much height.  Not while I'm re-training anyway.

BITD we used to make ramps like this that were 3 times as high out of old doors.  Just getting over them was a skill and it really jolts when you go from flat to 30-45 degrees.   We still managed it though.

A bit dangerous Lee.  You should wear a full-face cloth cap.
